How Does Cold Medicine Work
Each cold medicine works differently depending on the active ingredients included in it. Decongestants such as phenylephrine work by decreasing swelling in your nose and ears in order to reduce your discomfort. Antihistamines used to relieve cold symptoms such as chlorpheniramine work by blocking not only histamines but also acetylcholine, and are thought to help dry up certain bodily fluids and relieve symptoms like watery eyes and runny nose. Pain relievers and fever reducers like ibuprofen work to reduce inflammation by blocking your body’s production of certain natural substances, which in turns helps to decrease swelling, pain, and/or fever.
Do Supplements Relieve Symptoms Or Shorten The Duration Of A Cold Or The Ffu
Some recent research suggests that certain vitamins and herbs can ease cold and flu symptoms or shorten their duration. Overall, the evidence backing up most supplements in treating colds or the flu, however, ranges from weak to nonexistent.
Unlike drugs, the FDA doesnt require that supplements be proven safe and effective before they head to market. Heres the rundown on a few popular remedies.

What Can I Take For A Cold While Breastfeeding
If you are breastfeeding, its important to be careful about what you put into your body, as what you ingest can enter your breast milk and thus be ingested by your baby.
While most cold medicines are safe to take while breastfeeding, make sure to first:
- Check with your doctor.
- Determine the active ingredient in the medicine.
- Check the correct dosage amount.
- Be prepared to monitor your baby for any behavioral or medical changes.
Generally, the amount of medicine that enters your milk when breastfeeding is much lower than the amount your baby would be exposed to while in your uterus.
However, because these drugs do enter your milk in small quantities, try to stick with the lowest possible dose you need to treat your symptoms. Also, to minimize any possible effects on your baby, you can feed your baby first and then take the medicine.
Cough & Chest Congestion
Benzocaine : Numbing Agent. Temporarily relieves pain associated with itching, sore throat. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies or case reports in breastfeeding women. Due to its low oral absorption after application, maternal blood concentrations are probably too low to produce any significant clinical effects in the breastfed infant. Benzocaine cough drops or lozenges are an excellent choice for cough relief in breastfeeding mothers. Common trade names: Cepacol.
Menthol : Numbing Agent. Commonly used for topical analgesics and sore throat relief. Only minimal amounts of Menthol would be transferred into breast milk. Adverse effects to infants from breastfeeding are unlikely due to low relative dose and first-pass metabolism. There are no adequate and well controlled studies in breastfeeding women. Menthol cough drops, lozenges, and/or chest rub are an excellent choice for cough relief in breastfeeding mothers. Common trade names: Halls, Ricola, Ludens, Vicks
Guaifenesin : This is an expectorant used to loosen respiratory tract secretions. It does not suppress coughing. The poor efficacy of expectorants in general would suggest that they do not provide enough justification for use in breastfeeding mothers. However, untoward effects to the infants have not been described. Common trade names: Robitussin, Mucinex

If You Get The Flu Should You Take Tamiflu Or Other Antiviral Drugs
Four antiviral drugs are FDA-approved to treat the flu: Tamiflu , Relenza , Rapivab and Xofluza .
They help the most when you take them within 48-hours of symptoms first appearing, but may help for up to four to five days after you first feel sick. They may also reduce the risk of complications .
Experts and doctors differ on when to prescribe these medicines. Most doctors only prescribe them for people who have other illnesses or are at high risk for complications from the flu or both. That includes people over 65 and pregnant women. One reason doctors may not prescribe them to younger, healthier people is because of the side effects. The drugs can cause nausea, vomiting, headache and delirium.

What Is The Best Cough Medicine
There are two main types of cough medicine. The best cough medicine for you depends on your symptoms. If you feel congested and need help getting the mucus out, look for a cough expectorant, which may help loosen mucus, reduce congestion, and help make your coughs more productive. Mucinex Expectorant Tablets. If you have a dry cough or find that the coughing itself is hurting your throat or is getting in the way of work or sleep, youll want to look for a cough suppressant. Sometimes called antitussives, cough suppressant medications are available over the counter from brands like DayQuil and Sudafed. Keep in mind that many of these products contain more than one active ingredient. Be sure to read the label on your cough syrup, pills, or other product carefully. Breast Feeding And Cold Medicine
It is possible to safely combine breast feeding and cold medicine if absolutely necessary. Safely using medications while breastfeeding requires medical supervision. Understand that these drugs only treat symptoms. Colds are viruses, and the drugs will not make them go away any faster.
Although there are many exceptions, a basic rule of thumb is that 1% of the dose that you take will find its way into your breast milk and therefore be given to your baby. Relative baby does of less than 10% are generally considered safe for babies.
Over-the-counter cough and cold products should not be used to treat infants and children less than 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur from such use.

Are There Natural Cold Remedies I Can Use While Breastfeeding
Sure! There are ways to help manage cold symptoms without medications while breastfeeding. Here are a few:
-
Drink lots of water or other clear liquids. Clear liquids, especially warm ones, help break up mucus in your nose and chest. Adding honey or lemon to warm tea, or having sips of warm broth is a great way to get hydrated and relieve congestion.
-
Take a hot, steamy shower. The steam from a hot shower can also help open up your sinuses and nasal passages. Even if you dont take a shower, standing in a bathroom full of steam from a hot running shower will help.
-
Use a humidifier. A humidifier provides the same benefits as a steamy shower. Run a humidifier while youre sleeping to get some relief overnight.
-
Try a saline nasal spray. If that congestion just wont go away, you can also consider a drug-free saline nasal spray. It uses the power of sterile saltwater to break up mucus in the nose.
-
Rest. As a mom, rest might not be in your vocabulary as much as youd like anymore, but if possible, try to get a bit more rest while youre sick. Itll help your body kick that cold to the curb a little quicker.
