Kroger Ups Its Flu Shot Game

Kroger has launched a new and comprehensive flu shot program designed to be the leader among food retailers when it comes to vaccinations this autumn and winter.

Kroger’s new program includes touchless in-store appointments and drive-thru vaccinations at 19 community Flu Shot Centers across the country both of which can be booked online. Kroger Health will also provide on-site flu shot programs for businesses and organizations.

“With so many health facilities already overburdened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever for all Americans to get a flu shot,” said Colleen Lindholz, president of Kroger Health. “At our COVID-19 drive-thru test sites, we were able to assist thousands of people in getting a test in a short amount of time. By using that model to provide flu shots, we hope to provide more customers with a safe, convenient option to get vaccinated.”

“It will be very difficult for people to determine the difference between flu symptoms and COVID-19,” said Doug Cornelius, health and wellness director for Kroger Health. “That’s why it’s so important for Americans to get a flu shot this year. It not only has been proven to help protect against the flu, but may also help reduce misidentification as COVID-19.”

The move from Kroger comes a week after Albertsons Cos. announced it’s expanding immunizations to serve children as young as 3 years old.

Kroger Partners With The State To Offer Flu Vaccine

Kroger pharmacists are hosting free flu shot clinics at many state facilities across Indiana for employees that carry State insurance. If you dont carry State insurance, the cost is $20 payable by cash or check at these clinics.

Kroger Pharmacies are also administering vaccines at participating retail locations. Vaccinations may also be administered at your doctors office, retail pharmacy or nearby walk-in clinic. Even at any of these locations, the state covers 100 percent of the cost if you carry state insurance.

The best protection against the flu is to get a flu shot every year before the flu season starts. Since influenza viruses change over time, it is important to get a shot every year. Each year the vaccine is remade to include the types of flu virus expected to cause illness during that flu season. The vaccine begins to protect you within a few days after vaccination, but the vaccine is not fully effective until about 14 days after vaccination.

If you are wondering if you should get a vaccine, a detailed list can be found at Who Should Get Vaccinated against Influenza.

When Should You Get Your Flu Shot

Its generally recommended that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, according to the CDC. This is especially important because of the ongoing spread of COVID-19. The flu season peaks often in February and can last until May, so you can still get the flu vaccine later. No matter when you get your flu shot, it will still be valuable to help protect you for the rest of the flu season. Talk to your provider about the best time to get your flu shot. Remember to ask about other vaccines you might need to protect yourself this year too.

Flu Shots Are Still Important This Year

Last year’s flu season may have seemed pretty mild, as mask-wearing and social distancing helped to reduce the spread of both flu and COVID-19. But with flu season on the horizon again, and many hospitals already overwhelmed by the Delta variant, we need to be especially vigilant this year – and that means getting your flu shot! Experts recommend getting the flu vaccine as early as possible, starting in September, before the virus begins to spread in the fall and winter. Even if you’re late to the party, though, it’s better to get the shot than skip it altogether.

None of us want to spend more time in a clinic or doctor’s office than we need to, which is why a quick, easy, and free flu shot at a retail location might be your best bet. A number of pharmacies, box stores, and supermarkets offer in-store flu shots for free for most people. In many cases, you don’t even need an appointment. For your convenience, we’ve put together a list of some popular locations offering free flu shots this year. Just remember to check availability at your location before heading out!

When Are Flu Shots Available For 2022

Flu shots are typically available from September to May, although the timing can vary depending on the specific region of the United States.

When I inquired about flu shot availability in Atlanta, Georgia, in mid-August, many pharmacies told me that they had yet to receive the new batches and told me to check back on September 1. When I called the pharmacies again in the second week of September, flu shots were in full supply.

Now lets look at what these major chains say youll pay for a flu shot at their pharmacies.

What Are The Prices For Vaccines At Kroger

Here is how out-of-pocket costs compare at Kroger pharmacies in four states:

Shingrix: $195

HPV: $500 per dose

What Kinds Of Vaccines Are Available

There are multiple versions of the vaccine, but they all have the same functions but are formulated to address the different needs of certain populations, says Dr. Perkins. For instance, two types are more concentrated and created for people 65 and older who are vulnerable to complications from the flu, she adds. Other flu formulations can be given to anyone and Flublok is for those with an egg allergy.

They all serve the same purpose: to help gain immunity over the years virus, she says.

Free Shots Without Insurance

According to GoodRx, many county health departments offer free flu shots during flu seasonwith or without insurance. Contact your county’s health department to see if you can benefit from this service. Even if you don’t have health insurance , you may be able to get the jab without cost through local churches and synagogues, free clinics, and community centers.

“Last flu season, the CDC reported record numbers of people vaccinated against the flu, and we experienced a near non-existent flu season,” Kevin Ban, MD, chief medical officer at Walgreens, told Health. “This shows that the flu shots, combined with other preventive measures, remain the best way to fight off flu.”
