JACKSONVILLE, Fla. As the #FluVaxJax campaign continues, pharmacies are now able to provide flu vaccines to kids three years and older at no cost.

You Should Definitely Get It Before October

Getting a flu shot as early as possible is always important. The CDC recommends getting your vaccine by October because it takes a few weeks to become effective. But if you can get one now, you probably should. Among other reasons, it will help maintain availability of both vaccines and administrators by preventing a run on flu shots when the season actually hits.

How Can I Organize My Flu Shot At Cvs Or Minuteclinic
To arrange your flu shot at CVS or MinuteClinic you need to
- locate a CVS pharmacy or a minute Clinic
- if booking online, youll need to digitally provide the necessary information and consent beforehand
- schedule an appointment online
- walk into a CVS or MinuteClinic for a flu shot without a booking
What Else Should I Know
Flu season is from October to May of each year, and the vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective, so go get one now. The flu comes in multiple strains, and researchers do their best to create a vaccine to protect us against the viruses that pose the highest risk each year.
“Dozens of influenza centers around the world are constantly conducting surveillance for influenza,” says Paz. “The World Health Organization takes all this data and considers other factors like the availability of vaccine viruses before it makes a recommendation on the composition of the influenza vaccine.”
Even though a vaccine isn’t completely fool-proof, it’s worth your time and energy. The vaccine can protect you against the flu and can reduce the severity and length should you be exposed.
While the vaccine won’t give you the flu, it’s not unusual to experience a little bit of nausea, headaches, fever, and muscle aches. These are small side effects compared to the flu, which in some cases can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization, and even death.
In addition to getting vaccinated, don’t forget to step up your handwashing game and get plenty of rest. The flu shot is just a way to help keep you and those around you healthy so you can be present for all the fun that fall has to offer.

Heres Where You Can Get A Free Flu Vaccine Right This Second
You may have seen some ads that make it sound like you can roll into any pharmacy for a free flu vaccine. Major pharmacy chains like Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Walmart, and even Costco do offer flu vaccines, but the cost depends on your specific insurance situation. Heres what to know if…
You have private insurance through a school or employer: The CDC says that most private insurance companies will allow you to get your influenza vaccine without a copayment even if you havent reached your deductible yetas long as you go through an in-network provider. That could be a doctor like your primary care provider, or it could be somewhere like a pharmacy. For example, Rite Aid accepts most major health insurance plans including Cigna and Humana, a Rite Aid spokesperson tells SELF. CVS also takes most insurance plans, and it provides a locator to help you see if theres a CVS that accepts your specific insurance, a spokesperson tells SELF. Its a similar situation with Walgreens, which says it provides coverage under most insurance plans and also has a locator so you can find locations near you that will give you a free flu vaccine.
Just in case, it still makes sense to contact your insurance provider or the pharmacy/doctor you want to see to confirm that itll be free before heading there for your flu vaccine.
The Affordable Care Act
If youre under age 65 and dont have health insurance, you may be eligible for low-cost coverage through Healthcare.gov or a state exchange established by the Affordable Care Act .
Under the ACA, routine vaccines are considered preventive care. This means they must be covered at no cost to you when given by a provider who is covered by your insurance. This is also true for most private health plans. Adult children are allowed to stay on their parents health plans until age 26.
You can apply for ACA coverage through the extended August 15 deadline on Healthcare.gov. If your state runs its own exchange, you can check the enrollment deadlines on Healthcare.gov as well.
Monthly premiums on ACA marketplace health plans are lower than usual, too. Due to the pandemic, the federal government has boosted financial assistance for people of all income levels.
