Getting Shots And Vaccines With Your Health Insurance

Vaccines are important for protecting you from preventable diseases like measles, meningitis, and the flu. Vaccines prepare your immune system to fight diseases without making you sick, so that when you’re exposed to the real thing, you can save your days off of work for something more fun than lying in bed with a splitting headache and a burning throat.

Getting a flu shot every year is the best way to protect yourself, your community and those you love from the flu. You won’t get the flu from the flu shot. But it does spur your body to produce antibodies that will protect you from the illness. It takes about two weeks from the time you get your flu shot for it to work. Thats why its so important to get your flu shot early in the flu season.

You can get a flu shot from your primary care doctor. Many other places offer flu shots too, like your local pharmacy, health fairs or your local Florida Blue Center.

Why You Need It

Think you don’t need a flu shot? Think again. People talk themselves and others out of getting a flu shot but they put themselvesand their family and friendsat risk. If you have grandchildren, getting a flu shot helps protect them because children are particularly susceptible to getting very sick from the flu.

The flu is a serious illness. People over age 65 face a greater risk of developing dangerous complications when they catch the flu. In fact, 70 to 85 percent of flu-related deaths occur in adults over age 65. Having a condition like asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, heart disease or diabetes also increases your risk of complications from the flu. Pneumonia is the most common and deadly complication of the flu. But did you know having the flu also increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke?

New Members Can Get Vaccines At Pharmacies

Effective immediately, members 18 years of age and older with pharmacy benefits can now go to a participating Express Scripts retail pharmacy to receive 11 different immunizations. Vaccines are covered with no cost share to the member and a prescription is not required. Previously, only the flu vaccine was available from a retail pharmacy.

The 11 vaccines are:

  • Polio
  • Shingles

In Massachusetts, the pharmacist must be registered and licensed to administer the vaccine. Since requirements vary in other states, members should contact their local pharmacy to confirm availability.

Your employees can continue to get their immunizations at their doctor’s office or at an outpatient clinic. The addition of the pharmacy option is intended to expand access to these preventive services. Employees should contact their pharmacy directly to confirm if a pharmacist is available to administer any of these vaccines.

Everything You Need To Know About The Flu

It might seem early, but the sooner you plan for flu season the betterits easy to put it off until winter when youre most at risk.

What is the flu?Its an infection thats caused by different viruses every year. It shouldnt be confused with the common cold, which isnt as severe and its symptoms show up slower. Colds also typically dont cause fevers or headaches.

Is it contagious? Its very contagious. If someone with the virus breathes, sneezes or coughs, the virus can go into the air and onto surfaces. It can be passed to you by breathing it in or getting it on your hands and touching your face.

What are the symptoms?

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms are typically gone after about 5 days but can last over a week in some cases. If you think you have the flu, you should see your doctor to get checked out. If youre too sick to make it to the doctors office, try using telehealth services.

Should you get vaccinated?Yes, its one of the best ways to fight the flu. Almost everyone over 6 months old should get it unless theyre allergic or have certain medical conditions. If youre unsure if youre at risk, ask your doctor if youre able to get a vaccination.

The virus changes year to year, so a new shot is needed annually to ensure your body is protected. Be sure to get it done before the end of October because it takes about two weeks to take effect. As an FEP member, your flu shot counts as preventive care, meaning you pay nothing for year-round protection.
