Why More Americans Are Skipping The Flu Shot And What Theyre Doing Instead

Here are some of the top reasons adults gave for not getting vaccinated this season:

  • 41% think flu shots dont work very well
  • 39% are concerned aboutthe vaccines side effects
  • 28% saythey never get the flu
  • 24% are concerned about getting the flu from the shot
  • 20% do not think influenza is a serious illness

With Covid, people have forgotten about influenza. This is another serious winter respiratory virus, it can do bad damage to you, William Schaffner, medical director of NFID, said at the conference. The key to prevention is vaccination.

The altered approach this flu season may be partly due to the timing of the omicron-specific booster and peoples concerns with getting both the updated Covid booster and the flu shot. Just 32% of U.S. adults are very confident that it is safe to receive the vaccines at the same time, the survey shows.

The CDC affirms that doing so has proven to be safe. Studies of over 450,000 people indicate that only mild symptoms are experienced after receiving the immunizations simultaneously, says Walensky, adding that, Most of those are resolved really quite quickly.

Meanwhile, choosing to get one vaccination over the other is not a wise decision, Walensky warns. Its useful to increase your bodys defenses against both viruses.

And, she reiterates, bundling them together is easy as well as safe: You want to make sure you get both, and its often more convenient to get them both at the same time.

What Is The Flu

Influenza is an infectious respiratory disease. Generally, the flu may resolve on its own. However, if the flu goes untreated, you may be at risk for complications that can be life-threatening. Those that might be at a higher risk of severe flu complications include children under 5, adults over 65, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses or compromised immune systems. If you fall into any of these categories, it is essential that you take strides towards flu prevention by getting your flu shot at MinuteClinic. The flu shot works by exposing you to an inactive flu virus and the flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body after vaccination. These antibodies will help to protect you if you are exposed to the flu virus. Essentially, getting a flu shot prepares your body to fight the flu.

Nearly three quarters of Americans say they plan to get a flu shot this year, with 45 percent planning on getting their vaccine at a retail pharmacy

WOONSOCKET, R.I. CVS Health is reminding Americans that as the country continues to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic it is more important than ever to stay current with vaccinations and other routine health care needs. By getting a flu shot this fall and taking other proactive measures to improve general health and immunity, individuals and families can protect themselves against seasonal flu and help safeguard the overall health of the community.

According to a survey commissioned by CVS Health Flu Intention Survey, commissioned by CVS Health in June 2021 and conducted among a general population of U.S. consumers, consumers intention to get vaccinated against seasonal flu increased five percentage points from June 2020 to June 2021, with 71 percent of those surveyed saying they definitely or likely will get a flu shot this season. In addition, 45 percent of consumers surveyed said they planned to get a flu shot at a retail pharmacy, the most preferred destination cited, followed by a doctors office .

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals make plans to get vaccinated early in the fall, before flu season begins, and ideally no later than the end of October.

The Benefits Of Getting A Flu Shot

Influenza is a common and potentially serious viral infection that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Receiving the annual flu vaccine is one of the best ways to protect against infection and subsequent complications, reports the CDC.

The flu shot can:

  • Reduce the risk of flu illness by 40% to 60% among the general population during seasons when current flu viruses are well-matched to those used to make flu vaccines
  • Reduce the severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick
  • Prevent millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor visits annually
  • Reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization
  • Help protect people around the person who gets vaccinated

The CDC currently recommends that adults at least 65 years old receive either a higher dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine over the standard dose vaccine for additional protection, due to the fact that older adults are at higher risk of having serious health complications from the flu. The three recommended vaccines include the Fluzone High-DoseQuadrivalent vaccine, Flublok Quadrivalent recombinantflu vaccine and Fluad Quadrivalent adjuvanted flu vaccine. All of these vaccines are quadrivalent vaccines, meaning they protect against four flu viruses.

Why Is It Important For The Elderly To Get Flu Shots

There are three main groups of people who are at the greatest risk from the flu virus, and they are

  • young children under the age of 5
  • people with certain underlying health conditions

Unfortunately, the elderly, and by elderly we mean the over 65s, are often in two of these three categories, making the risk even greater.

Every year, the elderly account for 9 out of the deaths from flu, and for 6 out of the 10 hospital stays caused by flu.

In addition, the older your loved one is, the less resistance they will have to catching the flu catch if they come into contact with the influenza virus, and the greater the chance that they will develop complications as a result.

Underlying health conditions will also make an elderly person even more susceptible to a greater risk of complications if they catch the flu, putting many elderly adults at greater risk again.

The following underlying health conditions can put an individual at increased risk of greater complications from flu include
