Is Flu Illness Serious

Millions of children get sick with flu each year and thousands are hospitalized. CDC estimates that since 2010, between 7,000 and 28,000 children younger than 5 years old have been hospitalized for flu each year in the United States. Children with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and disorders of the brain or nervous system, and children younger than 5 years old are more likely to end up in the hospital from flu.

Some people at high risk can develop complications that can result in hospitalization and even death.

Flu seasons vary in how serious they are from one season to another. Since 2010, CDC estimates that between 130 and 1,200 children have died from flu each year.

Back to school expert Ladonna Hart visits from CVS

Meijer, for example, has a strict protocol for its pharmacists to follow: Only licensed pharmacists can test for strep and flu. But any certified, trained and licensed Meijer pharmacist or pharmacy intern can administer vaccines.

The services are provided in a private consulting room or, sometimes, the consulting area of the pharmacy. If patients test positive for the strep or flu, the pharmacist then provides access to necessary medications.

For strep, only those people ages 12-45 can be tested and they have to be otherwise healthy, with some chronic conditions disqualifying them, Vroman said.

Its rare to get strep as an older adult, so that is one of the reasons for the age restriction, she said.

While insurance can be used to pay for Tamiflu and antibiotics, the tests arent covered because Meijer is a retailer, not a medical provider in the eyes of insurance companies, said Joe Hirschmugl, public relations manager for Meijer. The flu test is $35 and the strep costs $25, resembling a doctors office co-pay. Health savings accounts may be used to pay for them.

While Vroman wouldnt provide specific numbers, she said more patients visited Meijer pharmacies in Michigan in 2018 for these tests than ever before, underscoring the growing popularity of one-stop pharmacy services.

While Americans are being highly encouraged to get a COVID-19 vaccine, pharmacies are looking ahead to the 2021 flu season.

CVS, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite Aid have announced they are accepting appointments for people to get a flu shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people age 6 months and older receive a flu shot before the end of October and that getting it is even more important during the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the overall burden of respiratory illnesses is important to protect vulnerable populations at risk for severe illness, the healthcare system, and other critical infrastructure. Thus, healthcare personnel should use every opportunity during the influenza season to administer influenza vaccines to all eligible persons, the CDC said.

Rite Aid is offering the flu vaccine via walk-in appointments and online scheduling. Rite Aid began administering the flu shot on Aug. 12.

Walmart said it is offering a low-cost flu vaccine and a free COVID-19 vaccine that people can get at the same time.

Walmart said it also will continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while administering vaccines.

CVS said it has flu shots available at all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations.

What Is The Flu

Influenza is an infectious respiratory disease. Generally, the flu may resolve on its own. However, if the flu goes untreated, you may be at risk for complications that can be life-threatening. Those that might be at a higher risk of severe flu complications include children under 5, adults over 65, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses or compromised immune systems. If you fall into any of these categories, it is essential that you take strides towards flu prevention by getting your flu shot at MinuteClinic. The flu shot works by exposing you to an inactive flu virus and the flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body after vaccination. These antibodies will help to protect you if you are exposed to the flu virus. Essentially, getting a flu shot prepares your body to fight the flu.
