Cvs Walgreens Lead Unprecedented Flu Season Prep As Covid

U.S. drugstore chains led by Walgreens and CVS Health are rolling out an unprecedented early push for Americans to get vaccinated at their pharmacies for the seasonal flu before that virus converges with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Walgreens Monday announced plans to increase flu vaccine supply and staff up its pharmacies as drugstores prepare for what they believe will be an onslaught of customers wanting protection for the seasonal flu while they wait for a vaccine for Covid-19. Marketing and advertising has already begun this summer at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and many other pharmacies and grocers encouraging Americans to get the seasonal flu vaccination ahead of a fall rush.
“It’s going to be difficult to tell the difference between the seasonal flu and Covid-19 so protection against one is important,” CVS Health chief executive Larry Merlo said in an interview. “If you think you’re just going to power through it because you think it’s the seasonal flu, you’re going to have a difficult time.”
CVS alone expects to administer up to 18 million seasonal flu vaccinations, which will be double last years volume, the drugstore chain said. And Walgreens said demand for flu, pneumonia and other immunizations could be as much as 30-50% higher.
The Cost Of A Flu Shot Without Insurance
The average cost of a high-dose flu shot without insurance is typically around $70. The CDC private sector cost for a quadrivalent flu shot ranges from $16.94 to $25.76. However, the price you pay may be higher at some locations due to additional fees.
See the chart below for prices at major pharmacies such as CVS, Walmart, Rite Aid, Costco, and Walgreens. If you have not gotten vaccinated this flu season, it is recommended that you get the flu shot as soon as possible.
Where Can I Find Flu Shots Near Me
Most local pharmacies offer flu shots, as do drug stores and quick clinics. All of the major chain pharmacies in the US — CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Walmart, Kroger — offer flu shots at most of their locations across the country.
Each one offers its own pharmacy finder:
Your local pharmacy probably offers flu shots, too.
You can also ask your primary care physician about getting a flu shot. Many urgent care clinics also offer flu shots, but you might have to cough up a copay — which is still better than coughing up your lungs if you get the flu.

Walgreens Cvs Urge Early Flu Shots Due To Covid
Aug. 17 — U.S. drugstore chains Walgreens and CVS said Monday they’re undertaking early efforts to encourage Americans to get their flu shots — due to an increased risk of harm this year due to COVID-19.
Walgreens said Monday flu shots are now available at its U.S. locations and CVS Health said it plans to double up supplies.
Walgreens said vaccinations can be done at nearly 9,100 locations, which are operating under heightened safety protocols.
The retailer said manufacturers are making extra flu vaccine doses available to meet the anticipated demand for flu shots this season.

” is one more thing we know everyone can do to help keep themselves and their loved ones healthy.”
CVS, which also has flu doses in stock now, said it expects to administer as many as 18 million flu vaccinations — twice the volume in 2019.
“It’s going to be difficult to tell the difference between the seasonal flu and COVID-19 so protection against one is important,” CVS CEO Larry Merlo said. “If you think you’re just going to power through it because you think it’s the seasonal flu, you’re going to have a difficult time.”
The CDC says flu season typically spans from fall until spring and can begin as early as October. Some flu seasons have lasted until May. The agency recommends flu shots for all persons at least 6 months old.

Young children and babies have a higher risk of contracting the flu, so it’s even more critical for them to get vaccinated. However, babies younger than 6 months cannot receive the vaccine, so families with infants should take extra precautions.
Parents and caregivers of children under six months should be vaccinated to prevent getting the flu and passing it along to an infant. And anyone who comes in contact with a young infant should also be vaccinated.

How Flu Shots Became Big Sales Booster For Walgreen Cvs
Less than four years after pharmacies like Walgreen and CVS began a lobbying blitz to convince state… regulators across the country to allow pharmacists to administer flu shots, the drugstore giants are seeing a huge increase in business and sales.
Less than four years after Walgreen and rival drugstores like CVS/Caremark Corp. began a lobbying blitz with state regulators to allow pharmacists to administer seasonal influenza shots, pharmacies are beginning to see benefits of the strategy in their bottom lines.
Earlier this week, Walgreen reported thanks in part to a 25 percent increase to 6.9 million the number of flu shots stores have administered since January of 2012. Meanwhile, CVS fourth-quarter 2012 earnings released earlier this week also benefited from increased flu vaccinations during the epidemic.
Much of the growth can be attributed to the ability of pharmacists to administer flu shots. That was generally not possible until fall of 2009 when several states issued special waivers to allow pharmacists – rather than just doctors and other health professionals – to administer seasonal and H1N1 vaccines amid fears of a pandemic.
Walgreen and CVS took advantage of the crisis to convince a growing number of state regulators that pharmacists should be allowed to have the expanded role as a way to save lives and potentially money by getting more Americans flu shots from an army of pharmacists.

While most major health insurance providers cover the cost of flu shots, that?s not always an option. Without insurance, you can still get a flu shot starting at $19.99, depending on where you go. Here are six stores that offer seasonal flu shots and how much the vaccine costs there.

White House Mandates Pfizer Vaccines For Millions Of Citizens Before The Fda Clinical Or Safety Reviews Have Been Made Public
Manufacturers are making millions of extra flu vaccine doses to meet the highly anticipated demand for flu shots this season, Walgreens said in a statement. Walgreens has a long history of providing immunizations to the more than one third of patients who receive their flu shots at a pharmacy and has worked closely with manufacturers to increase supply and administer flu vaccinations as soon as possible this season.
The push by retail drugstores to get vaccinated for the seasonal flu comes as U.S. public health officials plead with Americans to protect themselves in what Centers for Disease Control & Prevention director Dr. Robert Redfield last week said could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, weve ever had.
Drugstore chains are urging customers to complete any forms such as those asking about medical histories online and bring them in to pharmacies to speed the vaccination process.
While there is certainly a financial incentive for Walgreens, CVS, Walmart and others to want to boost store traffic and get customers in their stores for a flu shot, executives said the vaccination push is designed to improve public health during an unprecedented U.S. crisis.
The convergence of Covid-19 and flu season means that flu vaccinations are critical to reduce the overall burden of respiratory illnesses on the healthcare system and help protect communities, said Walgreens chief medical officer Dr. Kevin Ban.
