How To Get The Flu Vaccine For Free Through Tricare

Visit a military hospital or clinic. You should call ahead and make sure that the flu vaccine is available. Some clinics have certain hours that walk-in vaccinations are done and some require an appointment. Active duty service members have priority so prepare yourself for a possible wait.

Visit an in-network pharmacy. You can search on Tricares website to find a local participating network pharmacy or you can call the Tricare line at 363-1303.

Last December the Tricare retail pharmacy network changed so you may not be able to go to the same pharmacy you went to for your flu vaccine previously. Make sure you check if your pharmacy of choice is in network now.

For example, last year you might have gone to the CVS pharmacy in Target. Tricare no longer uses CVS. They switched to Walgreens.

You can also get your flu vaccine at Walmart, Kroger and Rite Aid to name a few.

Before heading to the pharmacy, call first. Youll need to make sure a pharmacist will be available to give the flu vaccine, as Tricare will only cover the cost if it is given by a pharmacist.

If you get the flu vaccine by someone at an onsite clinic that is not a pharmacist, you may have to pay the full price of the flu vaccine.

Make sure when you talk to them to ask what hours the pharmacist will be available to give shots and if there is an age restriction. Some pharmacy policies do not allow them to give the flu vaccine to children under a certain age.

Are You An Active Duty Or Guard/reserve Member

Youre required to get the flu vaccine.

• You have priority to get the vaccine at military hospitals and military clinics.
• You can also get vaccines at participating retail network pharmacies.

If you go to a participating network pharmacy, you won’t have any cost-shares or copayments if the flu vaccine is administered by a pharmacist. You can also go to a TRICARE-authorized provider at a participating network onsite clinic.

If you go to a network doctor other than your primary care manager , you must get a referral from your PCM. In addition, you may have to pay copayments or cost-shares for the office visit.

When you get a flu vaccine from a participating network pharmacy, follow your Service policy guidance for recording the vaccine in your shot record. You’ll need the following information:

• The date the vaccine was given
• The vaccine name or code
• Manufacturer

Flu Vaccinations In The Community:

This year, veterans may get a flu shot at their local CVS pharmacies or other retail pharmacies , and then have the immunization information transferred directly to Lovell FHCC. Veterans enrolled for VA health care can walk into their nearest CVS and get a regular dose shot, through March 2022. Veterans are asked to show photo ID and their Veteran ID card. NOTE: Not all CVS pharmacies are in the VA network. Lovell FHCC follows CDC guidelines for the provision of flu shots. If you are under 65 years old, you should receive the standard dose vaccine. If you are 65 and older, or ordered by your doctor, you should receive the high-dose flu shot.

Please note veterans 65 and older who go to CVS to receive FLUAD, a trivalent vaccine specially formulated to stimulate a greater immune response, will have to pay out-of-pocket or file with their third-party insurance. Free Flu Shots For Those Eligible To Receive Va Care

If you are eligible to receive VA health care, you can receive a flu shot at a VA clinic. If you are not already in the system, youll be required to complete VA Form 10-10EZ. Submit to your nearest VA medical center along with your DD Form 214 discharge paperwork or the equivalent before you can receive a free flu shot.

A Major Pharmacy Provider Is Rejoining The Tricare Network Another Is Leaving

CVS will rejoin the TRICARE pharmacy network as of Dec. 15, while Walmart/Sams Club will leave the network at the same time, Express Scripts officials told MOAA. With the change, military families will have access to the two largest chain drugstores in the U.S. Walgreens and CVS together with many smaller chains and independent pharmacies.

The change is part of the next generation TRICARE pharmacy contract. Given the preliminary information available, MOAA believes the quality of the TRICARE pharmacy program will be maintained with these network adjustments and even improved for many beneficiaries. We understand families who fill prescriptions at Walmart or Sams Club will be inconvenienced, but others will be pleased to once again have CVS as an option for their prescription medications. With the robust number of CVS pharmacies, these network revisions will be a positive change for most military families.

Beneficiaries who get prescriptions filled at Walmart or Sams Club will receive a letter notifying them of the change. The letter will include three local TRICARE network pharmacies they might consider using instead, together with suggestions on how to transfer prescriptions most easily to another retail pharmacy, home delivery, or a military treatment facility pharmacy.

Families who fill prescriptions at Walmart or Sams Club will need to move them to another TRICARE network pharmacy location by Dec. 15.

Eligible veterans can visit participating locations to receive a vaccination at no cost.

No appointment or VA referral is required.

If youre eligible, simply go to an in-network retail pharmacy or urgent care location and present a valid, government-issued identification such as a Veterans Identification Card, Department of Defense ID card, state-issued drivers license or ID card to receive your flu shot. Tricare Expands Vaccination Coverage To Pharmacies Clinics

FALLS CHURCH, Va. The Department of Defense on Thursday issued an interim final rule through the Federal Register designating pharmacies as providers for H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccinations under its Tricare program. The policy change, effective immediately and expected to be fully implemented later this month, brings the program in line with other insurers that have covered pharmacist-administered vaccinations.

NCPA strongly supports the Pentagons decision to cover the provision of these critical vaccines at community pharmacies, stated Bruce Roberts, EVP and CEO of the National Community Pharmacists Association. The 9.5 million Tricare-eligible patients gain a convenient new vaccination option, he said. taxpayers and plan administrators will save money when vaccines are administered at pharmacies instead of costlier doctors offices or hospitals.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores also commended the decision, stating that pharmacies ” uniquely positioned to offer such services for patients as vaccinations.”

With the flu season upon us, it is important to help patients stay as healthy as possible. And for Tricare patients, this ruling provides them the ability to access their neighborhood pharmacy to receive these vaccinations, said NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson.

Tricare also is seeking comments on additional vaccines that should be covered through community pharmacies.
