WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. In the midst of all of the vaccination talk, two stores do not want you to forget about getting vaccinated against the flu this season.

CVS and Publix are two stores that are offering flu shots earlier than normal this year.

The move comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people get the flu shot in September or October.

Appointments to get the flu shot can be made on the CVS and Publix websites.

Publix is offering a flu shot and a COVID-19 vaccine at the same time. Publix also reminds those interested to show up with a copy of their drivers license and CDC vaccination record card.

Its important to get the flu shot every year. The flu shot protects you against the flu virus.

It can help you prevent a hospitalization or complications of actually getting the flu.

Video transcript

Who should get the flu shot? Everyone above the age of six months or older. Adults over the age of 65, pregnant women, or those with chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, coronary artery disease, or renal disease. But you should also get it even if youre healthy.

Is The Vaccine Effective

Free flu shots and bonuses for getting them

In any given year, the flu vaccine is about 40 percent to 60 percent effective, if it matches the actual flu strains circulating. The flu mutates from season to season meaning that vaccines need to be updated to keep up. Vaccine developers base the season’s formula on strains that are circulating in the Southern Hemisphere.

It’s too early in this year’s flu season to know how well the vaccine is matched. Even if the vaccine doesn’t prevent the flu 100 percent, it will make any illness much milder. That means fewer hospitalizations and deaths.

Who Should Get The Flu Vaccine

Almost everyone over the age of six months is a candidate for the flu vaccine, says the CDC. People who are at a higher risk of complications from the flu should make it a priority. This includes individuals 65 and over, pregnant women, children under five, and those with certain chronic conditions like asthma.

If you’re allergic to eggs or another ingredient in the flu vaccine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before getting the vaccine. The same goes for anyone who has symptoms at the time of the shot or who has had Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a neurological disorder where the nerves are attacked by the immune system.

Flu Shot Effectiveness Rate & Time Before It Takes Effect

    Publix

I have often wondered how long it takes for a flu shot to take effect. According to the CDC, it generally takes about 2 weeks for the flu vaccine to protect you from catching the flu virus.

The flu shot effectiveness rate is widely disputed. There are many variables â age, severity of a virus in a given season, new strains, unreported cases, and even effectiveness by manufacturer â that make it hard to nail down an effectiveness rate. Iâve seen effectiveness rates reported as anywhere from 40% to 90%.

Regardless of effectiveness rate, there is no risk in getting the flu from a flu shot, so sign me up. It is recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot. And it is recommended that children between 6 months and 8 years of age get 2 shots per season.

Where To Get A Free Flu Shot

For starters, there are a number of ways that you may be able to get a free flu shot:

Check with your employer to see if they will be offering free flu shots this year and tout the potential cost savings for them to do so, if they are not.
  • Your Physician through your Health Insurance: Indirectly, through your employer or if you have a public health insurance exchange, your health insurance is required to pay for your flu shot without any co-payment, due to Affordable Care Act coverage rules . If you are over age 65, Medicare Part B covers the cost of flu shots. And most state Medicaid agencies cover the cost of flu shots for Medicaid participants as well.
  • Your County Health Department: Many county health departments offer free flu shots to children and the elderly, and it is increasingly being offered to everyone. The only downside is the potential for long waiting lines. Check out your county or cityâs website for more information.
  • Your Library: This one is surprising, but a number of public libraries offer free flu shots. Check with yours.
  • Your School, College, or University: Many educational institutions now offer free flu shots to their students. Check to confirm.

    Seasonal Flu And Covid

COVID-19 and the flu will likely both be spreading this season, according to the CDC. Protecting yourself from the flu with a flu shot helps reduce your risk of serious illness and hospitalization.3 Thats important this year because there continue to be concerns about hospital capacity with the ongoing spread of COVID-19. It may be hard to know if you have COVID-19 or if it may be the flu or a cold, since symptoms are similar. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine will give you the best protection. You can even get them at the same time.3 Ask your doctor if you have more questions about how these vaccines can help protect you.
