Other States Open To All Adults

Arkansas, California, Colorado and New Mexico are other states allowing residents 18 and older to get boosters, and New York City also has opened them to all adults.

In framing the recommendation to open booster shots to the states entire adult population, Alexander-Scott noted an uptick in the positivity rate.

Our percent positivity was 3.2% last week, roughly double what it was only just a month ago, the director said. It now has climbed past 4%.

But unlike a year ago, when many marked the holidays in near-lockdown mode, this season, Alexander-Scott said, need not be as restrictive.

Tracking COVID-19 vaccinations by state:How many people have been vaccinated in the US?

We have the tools to protect us, she said, and not only for gatherings, but for schools and athletics. She listed some of the key ones: vaccination, masking where appropriate, social distancing, regular testing, good ventilation and staying home without visitors when feeling sick.

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving, you might want to keep it smaller and only have people who are vaccinated if they’re eligible, she said. You can eliminate potential stress or misunderstandings on Thanksgiving Day by reaching out now to the people you will be spending the holiday with to make sure everyone is on the same page. Use it as an opportunity to encourage someone who wondered whether or not they should get vaccinated.

While The Focus Remains On Containing The Coronavirus Pandemic Flu Season Is Fast Approaching

" Optional" Flu Shots For Kids Could Become a Thing of the Past

PROVIDENCE, RI Fall has arrived in southern New England, which means flu season is not far behind.

Last year’s COVID-19 restrictions and mask mandates meant there were hardly any flu cases in Rhode Island and around the country. This year, the seasonal virus is expected to make a comeback.

According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, the flu cases generally peak in February, though cases often start to ramp up in October.

‘an Uptick In Flu Cases’

That development was publicly reported on Tuesday during Gov. Dan McKees press conference by Health Department director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, who said the state is seeing an early spike in cases.

The flu numbers were seeing now in Rhode Island we sometimes don’t see until January, Alexander-Scott said.

In Rhode Island and all around the country, there is an uptick in flu cases, agreed pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth B. Lange, an American Academy of Pediatrics fellow and president of the Rhode Island Medical Society.

The reasons are likely multifold, Lange wrote in an email.

She listed reduction of masking protocols, personal relaxation of personal COVID-protection measures , more family and holiday gatherings, especially indoors as the New England weather has turned cold, more indoor school and sporting events, coupled with the fact that many citizens have not yet received their annual flu vaccine.

Like Johnson and Alexander-Scott, Lange urged people to be vaccinated.

Flu vaccines are available for children starting at six months of age, so I recommend that all citizens not yet vaccinated against influenza, the flu, talk to their health-care provider and receive a flu vaccine, Lange wrote.

Dr. Peter Hollmann, chief medical officer for Brown Medicine, also advised residents to be vaccinated.

Rhode Island Kicks Off Flu Vaccination Campaign

Governor Dan McKee kicked off Rhode Island’s annual flu vaccination campaign today by urging all eligible Rhode Islanders to get vaccinated to keep themselves and their loves ones as healthy and safe as possible this flu season.

Lieutenant Governor Matos was vaccinated at the event, which was held at Anthony’s Pharmacy in Providence. Governor McKee and Director of Health Nicole Alexander-Scott, MD, MPH, were vaccinated earlier in the flu season.

“I got my flu shot a few weeks back. It was quick, painless, and I didn’t have any side effects,” said Governor Dan McKee. “I encourage all Rhode Islanders to get their flu shot and their COVID-19 vaccine. Both shots are important to building a healthy, resilient Rhode Island.”

People can get flu shots and COVID-19 shots during the same visit to a pharmacy or other site where both vaccines are available.

“Getting your flu shot is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick during flu season,” said Lieutenant Governor Matos. “I get mine every year. With school-aged children and working in a public building, it’s important to me that I do everything I can to keep myself, my family, and my coworkers as healthy as can be. Flu season is approaching, so I hope you will get yours today like me.”

Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu shot every year. Vaccination is especially important for certain people, including:

Health Adopts Regulations To Require Flu Shots For Healthcare Workers In Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE â The Rhode Island Department of Health has announced that it has adopted new amendments to its Rules and Regulations for Immunization and Testing For Healthcare Workers that will make flu immunizations mandatory for all workers, students, trainees and volunteers who may have routinely anticipated face-to-face interaction, also known as “direct contact,” with patients at a healthcare facility.

“HEALTH listened closely to all stakeholders and used that feedback to craft amendments that addressed the concerns of healthcare workers and volunteers, while protecting patients from the threat of influenza,” said Michael Fine, MD, director of HEALTH.

Healthcare workers and volunteers who have a medical reason for not getting a flu shot may obtain a medical exemption from their doctor, licensed physician’s assistant or licensed nurse practitioner. This exemption must be renewed annually and submitted to the employing facility by December 15 each year.

“Those who care for and interact with patients in a healthcare setting have a duty to protect the health and safety of those for whom they care,” said Michael Fine, MD, director of HEALTH. “A flu shot for all those who interact with patients as part of their employment or volunteer efforts at a healthcare facility is the best way to prevent the spread of influenza to some of our state’s most vulnerable populations.”

Rhode Island Department Of Health Kicks Off Annual Flu Vaccination Campaign

The Rhode Island Department of Health launched Rhode Island’s annual flu immunization campaign today in collaboration with community partners, including East Bay Community Action Program and members of the East Providence Health Equity Zone community collaborative. Dr. Ailis Clyne, Medical Director of RIDOH’s Division of Community Health and Equity, discussed the dangers of the flu and the importance of flu shots for everyone older than six months of age. Flu vaccinations were also made available to event attendees.

“Year in and year out, a flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu. Limiting the spread of the flu by getting a flu shot is especially important if you spend time with younger children or the elderly, who are more susceptible to the effects of the flu,” said Dr. Clyne. “Flu shots are safe, effective, and easy to get in cities and towns across Rhode Island! Even if you don’t have health insurance or can’t afford a flu shot, there are places in Rhode Island where you can get vaccinated for free, like the public flu clinics that opened this week at schools across the state.”

Although doctors recommend flu shots for everyone older than six months of age, flu shots are especially important for certain people. They include the elderly, healthcare workers, younger children, pregnant women, and people with chronic medical conditions. Examples of chronic medical conditions include diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and asthma.
