Where Can You Get Free Flu Shots
Free flu shots are easier to find than you might think. If you’re a college student, most colleges offer free flu shots on-campus, while many employers offer free flu shots to their staff, says Dr. Sonpal.
Free flu shots are also available at your local pharmacies and some grocery stores. CVS and MinuteClinic locations in Target, for example, offer free flu shots every day at no cost through most health insurance policies and with no appointment necessary, according to a CVS representative.
Walgreens offers free flu shots through most health insurance policies, as well. You can get vaccinated during pharmacy and clinic hours every day without an appointment. The pharmacy is also currently running its “Get A Shot. Give A Shot” campaign: For every shot administered at a Walgreens pharmacy or health-care clinic between now and January 31, 2020, Walgreens will donate a vaccine to a child in need, “up to an aggregate donation value of $2.6 million,” says Rina Shah, pharmacy operations group vice president of Walgreens.
Wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco offer free flu vaccinations, tooand you don’t even have to be a member to get one, adds Dr. Sonpal. Military veterans enrolled in healthcare through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can also receive a free vaccination at Veterans Affairs health-care facilities.
How Effective Is The Vaccine
This varies from season to season because the vaccine itself changes each year. If the vaccine and the virus strains are a good match, the vaccine should be between 40 percent and 60 percent effective, says the CDC. If you do get sick even after a vaccine, chances are your illness will be much milder.
The CDC estimates that every year the flu hospitalizes 140,000 to 810,000 people and kills between 12,000 and 61,000. The vaccine may save 6,300 lives annually.

Most Flu Cases Are Occurring Among Younger Adults
Jason Singh, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Kaiser Permanente, told ABC-affiliate 7News in Arlington, Virginia, that 80 percent of influenza cases are occurring among young adults right nowwhich is a statistic that has been confirmed by the CDC. With that in mind, it’s especially important to make sure you and any younger guests get vaccinated against the virus before gathering together for Christmas and New Year’s.
The CDC has also reported that younger adults typically have the lowest flu vaccination rate in the U.S. This creates a “perfect storm for infections to increase and transmit,” Singh said.
He added, “Going to college, work, getting together, that’s where the cases are really rising and those are the folks that are bringing it back home and putting our elderly patients a little more at risk or those with chronic conditions at risk.”

Flu Shots Are Now Available At Cvs Pharmacy And Minuteclinic
CVS Health announced Aug. 25, 2020 that flu shots are now available at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic. The CDC recommends the vaccine be administered no later than the end of October.
CVS Health announced in an Aug. 25 news release that flu shots are now available at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic.
CVS Health advised in the release that with the ongoing health impacts of COVID-19 on local communities, it is more important than ever to stay current with vaccinations and other routine health care needs. Taking proactive measures like getting a flu shot this fall to improve general health and immunity, will protect individuals and families against seasonal flu, help safeguard the overall health of the community and minimize the impact on health care resources.
Recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that individuals make plans to get vaccinated early in the fall, before flu season begins, and ideally no later than the end of October, the release said.
We know our patients and customers are doing everything they can to keep their families as healthy as possible, while minimizing potential exposure to the flu and COVID-19, said Jon Roberts, chief operating officer, CVS Health. Because it can take two weeks for the vaccine to build immunity, we encourage all of our patients to get their shot in September or early October, before flu season peaks, the release quoted.

Flu Cases Typically Peak Around The End Of The Year
CVS’ announcement comes at the start of National Influenza Vaccination Week, which runs this year from Dec. 5 to 11. According to CVS, the CDC established this week in 2005 to highlight the importance of flu vaccinations throughout the holiday season and into the new year, as flu activity typically hits its peak around this time.
“Most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, although significant activity can last as late as May,” the CDC states. According to current data, flu activity is still low in the U.S. but it is slowly increasing.
“As the country continues the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, a flu shot remains the most effective way to protect against seasonal flu and is an important step individuals and families can take to help safeguard the overall health of the community and minimize the impact on strained health care resource,” CVS states.
Talk To Your Pharmacist Or Nurse Practitioner Prior To Your Vaccination
Before administering your vaccination, the immunizing pharmacist or nurse practitioner will want to know about any medical conditions you might have, any previous reactions to vaccines, and your medication history if you fill your prescriptions at another pharmacy. They will also be able to advise on any side effects that may result from your vaccination.

Profits Over Health: Is Cvs Pushing Consumers To Get A Flu Shot Too Early
Saturday, August 29, 2020
CVS pushing flu vaccinations in August
For a limited time while supplies last in participating states, customers will receive a $5 off $20 shopping pass when they get a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic, valid August 18 through October 31. Patients who receive a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic locations inside select Target stores will receive a $5 Target coupon, says the CVS promo.
Neither federal nor state health officials recommend flu vaccinations in August. The Rhode Island Department of Healths annual campaign to promote flu vaccination historically begins in October. One top public health expert charges the CVS strategy is picking profits over public health.
Best time for a flu vaccination is October say experts
in 2019, the flu hit Rhode Island in that January. In Rhode Island over the past five years, 6,255 have been hospitalized and 206 have died.
The winter of 2017-18 was the hardest hitting flu year in recent years with 1,390 hospitalizations and 60 deaths, according to data provided by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The Rhode Island Department of Health tells GoLocal that the flu hits Rhode Island later than CVS is promotion. Seasons go from the first week of October to the third week of May, with individual dates varying by season,” said RIDOH.

What Types Of Vaccines Are Available

There is more than one flu shot, so it can be challenging to decide which one to get. Flu shots are by far the most common flu vaccine available, although there is also a nasal spray. You can get the spray if youre healthy, between the ages of 2 to 49, and if you arent pregnant.
Almost all vaccines this year are quadrivalent, which means they protect against four different strains of the flu virus. Its important that you get a new flu vaccine every year. Thats because the specific virus strains change every year. Last seasons vaccine wont protect you against this seasons virus.
CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinics are offering the standard quadrivalent flu vaccine as well as the high-dose flu vaccine, which is for adults 65 and over.
Adults 18 and older who are allergic to eggs can also get the Flublok quadrivalent, says Linda Molaka, pharmacy manager at CVS Pharmacy. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about which is best for you.
