Who Should Get A Flu Vaccine
Everyone 6 months and older should receive a yearly flu vaccine, with rare exceptions. The flu vaccine causes your body to make antibodies that fight the flu, decreasing your risk of becoming sick with the flu. Since the viruses in the vaccine are not live, they cannot cause the flu. The flu vaccine is recommended annually, as immunity decreases over time. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be effective, so it is important to get the vaccine before the flu starts spreading in your area.
What Kind Of Vaccines Are Available
There is more than one flu vaccine, explains Dr. Strange. A nasal spray can be an option for younger people but it cant be given to people who have suppressed immune systems or anyone over 50. Theres also an egg-free vaccine called Flublok for people over 18.
A high-dose flu vaccine is recommended for people over 65. Theres a protein in it that causes more of an immune response, says Dr. Strange.
All the vaccines this year are quadrivalent, meaning they protect against four strains of the virus, he adds.
Rite Aid Offers Full Vaccination Check With New Flu Shot Availability
CAMP HILL, Pa. – Rite Aid announced Tuesday the availability of seasonal flu shots at Rite Aid pharmacies nationwide.”Immunizations play a key role in a person’s overall health and wellness year-round, but this is especially true when it comes to protecting oneself from the flu,” stated Jocelyn Konrad, Rite Aid EVP pharmacy. “With more than 11,000 immunizing pharmacists and thousands of locations across the country, getting a flu shot at Rite Aid is a convenient and easy way for people to make sure that they are protected.”
Patients can get more than just a flu shot at their local Rite Aid pharmacy, however. “We also encourage people to use flu season as an opportunity to review their immunization history and need for other vaccinations,” Konrad said. “Rite Aid pharmacists can review a person’s immunization history and make recommendations for additional vaccinations based on the individual’s unique needs.”
Subject to state regulations, Rite Aid pharmacists are able to administer vaccines that protect against tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis , as well as pneumonia and shingles at the same time as the seasonal flu shot. One dose of Tdap is routinely given at age 11 or 12, and the CDC recommends a Td booster be administered every 10 years.
The CDC also recommends a pneumococcal vaccine for those 65 and older and the shingles vaccine for people aged 60 and older.

Does Medicare Pay For Flu Shots At A Pharmacy
Medicare Part B will cover one flu shot per flu season at a pharmacy, if the pharmacy is Medicare-enrolled and accepts assignment.
For both flu and pneumonia vaccines alike, so long as the pharmacy is Medicare-enrolled and accepts assignment, there is no deductible or coinsurance to pay.
In this case, the pharmacy should bill Medicare directly for you, and you should have nothing to pay.
Always have a pharmacy forward any new vaccine information to your primary care doctor.

Getting The Rite Aid Flu Shot
Getting a flu shot is one of the best things you can do for yourself, for others, and for a health care system already overburdened due to the pandemic. Unlike the Covid-19 vaccine, which will be available to most people next year, the flu vaccine is available right now at retailers nationwide, including Rite Aid pharmacies. If you havent already, its not too late to get the flu vaccine.
There is no downside to taking the flu vaccine, says Theodore Strange, MD, interim chair of medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York. Its a preventable disease and even if you get the flu it will minimize the disease.
The more people who get the flu vaccine, the more likely communities will achieve herd immunity which is when enough people in an area get vaccinated to protect those who arent. There is a higher demand for flu shots this year but, so far, there seem to be enough vaccines to go around, Dr. Strange says.
Rite Aid Growth And Development
The companys growth continued, operating 267 stores in 10 states by 1972. It then became the third-largest retail drug store chain in the United States in 1981. Two years later, it passed the sales mark of $1 billion for the first time in its history.
When it marked its silver anniversary, Rite Aid was acquiring 420 stores in the East coast particularly in the states of Florida, New York, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The acquisition of that many stores pushed its number of outlets past the 2,000 store mark.
Before the turn of the century, the company had turned to the West Coast for its expansion with the acquisitions of Thrifty PayLess and K& B Incorporated which added more than 1,000 stores to its network. It also partnered with General Nutrition Companies , the largest retailer of mineral supplement and sports nutrition products.
Today, the company offers a wide range of over-the-counter medications as well as health and beauty aids, cosmetic items, household items, personal care products, convenience foods, and seasonal merchandise.
It was estimated that in 2013, more than 2 million customers a day were served by Rite Aid stores. Its stores filled close to 300 million prescriptions during the same year. Prescription refills may not only be ordered at Rite Aid stores as the company accepts prescription refills over the Internet through the website, www.riteaid.com.

When it comes to influenza shots, older adults have an extra option
In addition to the regular-dose influenza vaccine, people 65 and older have the option of being vaccinated with a high-dose vaccine made to bring about a stronger immune response. This stronger formulation was developed because peoples immune systems weaken as they age, making older adults more likely to catch the flu. Aging also lowers the bodys ability to have a strong immune response after getting the flu vaccine.
