Q: How Are The Vaccines Made

Next Question: Why does Colorado’s vaccine bus have Massachusetts plates?

Every year, researchers and manufacturers develop a vaccine that contains virus strains they believe will be circulating in the upcoming influenza season. Influenza vaccines contain three virusestwo type A and one type B. The viruses selected for the vaccine are grown in chicken eggs. For inactivated vaccines, the viruses are killed with formaldehyde, purified, and packaged in vials or syringes. The live vaccine is packaged in a special sprayer. About six months are required to produce influenza vaccines each year.

When Do I Need To Get My Flu Shot By

The health department recommends getting a flu shot by the end of October, but encourages people to get a flu shot any time even if it’s after October.

Flu season runs through May, so it’s not too late to get a shot even if it’s in November or December, said Kori Wilford, spokesperson for the county health department.

“In a typical year we see around 200 hospitalizations due to influenza over the course of the flu season September through May and that would overburden our hospitals even more,” Wilford said.

The health department anticipates that more mask-wearing will help slow the transmission of the flu and other respiratory infections as it did last year, she said. “However, last year we also had many children in remote learning and people working from home, capacity restrictions for businesses and less movement, such as travel and dining out, than we do now.”

Flu Shots: Questions And Answers

Shot fired during suspect arrest in Fort Collins

Who should get the flu shot?

Almost anyone more than six months old should get the flu vaccineespecially very young children, anyone over the age of 65, anyone with respiratory issues or weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

What is the best way to protect against the flu?

The best thing you can do is get the flu shot every year, right before the season starts. UCHealth will make flu shots available earlier than normal this year, as it takes two weeks for your flu shot to achieve full immunity.

Is the flu really that bad?

The flu may just be a virus, but it is highly contagious and active. Getting the flu can make you feel miserable and can lead to other complications like pneumonia, which can make even healthy people very sick.

Some Companies Might Be ‘grandfathered In’ To The Program

The vaccine verification program was rolled out as part of a public health order released Oct. 15 that announced the return of the mask requirement, and Wilford said that in combining the two, it’s likely some of the messaging “got lost” in the quick rollout.

But she said including the program in the mask mandate was intentional so they could support businesses that had already been requiring vaccinations and not making them feel like they “were taking a step back.”

“They’ve taken these huge efforts to enact these policies and enforce them and follow them in the spirit of reducing the spread of the virus and keeping their businesses going, and so it is frustrating,” she said.

As of Friday morning, the county was still trying to figure out if companies who had already been enforcing vaccine requirements and had their plans approved from the county for the new program can be “grandfathered in” to not requiring masks, despite the pause.

Flu Vaccinations Made Curbside

Many UCHealth primary care clinics have begun offering curbside influenza vaccinations for the first time. This year, many clinics began administering the vaccine a few weeks earlier, in September, to help reduce risk for individuals getting and spreading influenza. Flu shots can take can take up to a few weeks for the vaccine to become effective. In some populations, such as the elderly and people with chronic health conditions, the flu can lead to complications that may develop into more serious illness requiring hospitalization.

While its always important to get your flu shot, this year its of particular importance, says Angie Hauck, operations manager at UCHealth Primary Care Highlands Ranch and UCHealth Primary Care Castle Rock. Flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both spread this fall and winter and healthcare systems could be overwhelmed by having to treat both.

Some locations are offering curbside flu vaccines to patients when that is the purpose for their visit. Patients who need to be seen in the clinic for another reason can receive the flu shot during their appointment. Other locations have a separate entrance and designated area for flu shots and may offer both clinic and curbside options. Contact your primary care provider to find out about location-specific flu shot options.

This makes things easier for our patients and I believe it improves their satisfaction.

Larimer County Board Of Health Pauses Vaccine Verification Program Following Questions Anger

Larimer County’s voluntary vaccine verification program has been paused by the county’s Board of Health.

A resolution in support of the county’s mask mandate, with an amendment to pause the vaccine verification program, passed 4-1 at a Thursday meeting.

“At the request of the Public Health Director, the Board directs that the voluntary vaccine verification program … be paused indefinitely until additional input and information can be gathered from the community and the Board provides additional guidance,” the resolution stated.

Though the program wasn’t set to start until Nov. 1, the county decided to put a halt on it following community and business confusion and anger around it, along with requests for more information.

About the program: Larimer County offers businesses way out of mask mandate with ‘Verified Vaccine Facility’

“We know there was a lot of support for it, but I think the concerns kind of outweigh that right now,” Kori Wilford, spokesperson for the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, said Friday morning.

Wilford said that because the program wasn’t set to start for another 10 days, it could still be on track for Nov. 1, but the county needs to make sure there’s enough information, communication and transparency about what it will look like provided to the community.

Many of the people upset with the program, mask mandate or both showed up Thursday to voice their concerns to the Board of Health.

How Curbside Flu Shots Work

Make an appointment.

Patients who already see a UCHealth primary care provider can either go to My Health Connection or call their primary care clinic to schedule an appointment. Some clinics may offer same day availability or Saturday appointments, but schedules vary from location to location.

Bring your mask, ID and insurance card.

To keep you and medical personnel safe, dont forget to bring a mask and wear it during your appointment. You may need to show your ID and insurance card, too.

Go to your location at your allotted time.

When you drive up to your providers office, look for signs or a canopy in the parking lot or by the front of the building for instructions. You may need to call a number to let the office know you have arrived and describe your vehicle. You may be asked to pull up to a specific spot. In case of bad weather, you will receive instructions on where to go.

Complete any needed paperwork.

Before you receive the flu shot, you may be asked to sign a few forms, such as a flu questionnaire. Unless you are a self-pay patient, you will not be billed at the time of the vaccine. This will all be done at your vehicle.

Roll up your sleeve and roll down your window.

Make sure the medical provider can easily access the vaccine site usually the upper arm . Babies who are more than six months old and children typically receive vaccines in their thigh.

Thats it!
