Kaiser Permanente holding drive-thru flu shot clinics on Sept. 12

Having a bad case of the flu and the chills, aches, and fever that come with it can really put a damper on your winter fun. But thankfully, there’s a way to lower your chances of that happening.

“A flu shot is your best protection against catching the flu,” says Al Ray, MD, Chair of the Flu Immunization Task Force at Kaiser Permanente. The flu virus changes often, and the protection from the vaccine only lasts for about a year. That’s why you should get a flu shot every year, preferably in the fall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all adults, and children 6 months and older, get vaccinated against the flu. The shots are safe and wont make you sick. And getting vaccinated doesn’t just help protect you. It also helps make sure you don’t spread the flu to other people.

We’re now offering flu shot clinics at most of our facilities for members. Check online to find phone numbers, dates, and locations, and then head on over to get vaccinated.

Kaiser Permanente Rolls Out Drive

With COVID-19 in the background, physicians are urging everyone to get a flu shot this year. Pictured, Brae Pate, a licensed vocational nurse, prepares a flu shot in the drive-through area for a member at Kaiser Richmond Medical Center during the first week of the flu vaccination program.

Kaiser Permanente is offering convenient drive-through and outdoor walk-up flu shots at its medical centers across Northern California to maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members can see flu shot clinic locations and operating hours on the Kaiser Permanente website.

At the drive-through clinics, members will simply put their arm out the car window, get the shot, and be off. Members visiting walk-up clinics will be spaced 6 feet apart to minimize contact with others.

In addition to the website, members can call the Kaiser Permanente Northern California flu hotline to get more information at 1-800-573-5811.

We are doing everything we possibly can and are committed to providing a very safe environment to get a vaccine, said Randy Bergen, MD, clinical lead for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Flu Vaccine Program.

The flu, with its fever, headache, and cough, can be deadly for the very young and the very old, and a sickly ordeal at the very least for those in between. In the 2019-2020 flu season, the CDC estimated that up to 56 million people in the U.S. got the flu, as many as 740,000 were hospitalized, and up to 62,000 died.

What Is Antibody Testing For A Past Covid

    Season at peak levels early

Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections. An antibody blood test looks for antibodies in a persons blood. Kaiser Permanente is participating in research to help us learn more about COVID-19 antibodies.

Were not recommending antibody testing outside of research studies at this time. Antibody testing has limited clinical value and should not be used to diagnose active infection, determine immunity to COVID-19, make decisions about returning to work, or assess the need for vaccination in an unvaccinated person.

The CDC doesnt recommend getting an antibody test to determine if you need a COVID-19 vaccine or to check your immunity after being vaccinated.

Yes, but please keep in mind that we arent recommending antibody testing outside of research studies at this time because it has limited clinical value. However, Kaiser Permanente will provide antibody testing upon request for members who:

    • Have no current COVID-19 symptoms and
    • Had symptoms but dont anymore. It needs to have been more than 14 days since the onset of COVID-19 symptoms or a positive PCR test and
    • Have not had an antibody test in the last 30 days .
    • Are a pediatric patient being evaluated for Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children.

If you have symptoms now, you shouldn’t get the antibody test. You should .

Can The Flu Shot Make You Sick

You cant get the flu from the flu shot! The vaccines are made from inactivated virus, live virus, or a single protein from the flu virus. Your body will have a natural immune response to the vaccine that may include symptoms like fever, aches, and chills. This just means that your body is creating antibodies to the virus.

What Should I Do If I Get Sick

Common flu symptoms may include fever or chills, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache and fatigue/tiredness. If you have flu symptoms and are in a high risk group, contact your healthcare provider. If you are not in a high risk group but have symptoms, get plenty of rest and drink fluids, manage symptoms with Over-the-counter medications when appropriate.

OTC medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used to treat fever, headache, body aches, and sore throat.
