Can You Get The Flu Shot At The Same Time As A Covid

Flu shots & COVID-19: What you should know | Walgreens

Although data on receiving the COVID vaccine at the same time as the influenza vaccine is limited, the CDC advises that its safe to do so. Research is ongoing, but one study among healthcare workers found that the flu shot offered some protection against severe forms of COVID-19. But because they are two different viruses, you should be vaccinated against each one to be fully protected. Getting the flu shot will not interfere with the effects of the COVID-19 vaccine, and you dont have to disclose whether youve been vaccinated for COVID-19 if you dont want to.

In the instance that youre experiencing flu symptoms or youve tested positive for COVID-19, you should wait until recovering and completing your isolation period before getting a flu or COVID-19 shot. For mild symptoms and a negative COVID-19 test, its okay to go ahead and get vaccinated for the flu or COVID-19.

What Kind Of Vaccines Are Available

There are several different types of flu shots offered every year. Some are trivalent, meaning they protect against three strains of the flu virus, while others are quadrivalent The CDC doesnt recommend any one vaccine over another, so you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist about which one is best for you.

Walgreens offers the standard-dose flu shot suitable for people aged six months and over, as well as high-dose shots or shots with an adjuvant approved for people 65 and over. The chain is not offering the intranasal vaccine this year.

Do I Have To Make An Appointment

The COVID-19 vaccine requires making an appointment ahead of time at CVS.com. Most other vaccines are available on a walk-in basis. Same-day appointments are often available online. You can also answer the vaccine-specific questionnaire online instead of filling it out in person.

You may want to call ahead to your local CVS Pharmacy and make sure your desired vaccine is in stock. You can also check to see if theres a wait at the store or clinic.

What Kind Of Insurance Does Cvs Accept For Vaccines

CVS accepts more than 5,000 health insurance plans for vaccinations. Many routine vaccinations are considered preventive care under the Affordable Care Act and must be covered with no charge to you for visits to an in-network provider.

As a result, people with private insurance often find they have zero copays for routine vaccinations at retail pharmacies. But youll want to check with your plan or ask the pharmacist to run your insurance card before you receive the vaccine to be sure.

Flu Shot Price Notes:

  • The standard quadrivalent flu shot is designed to protect against four different flu strain viruses two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses and is now the standard offered everywhere.
  • The trivalent flu shot option is not being carried yet by any retailer this year.
  • The FLUAD quadrivalent flu shot is recommended for those age 65 and over, as it includes an adjuvant designed to strengthen, broaden, and lengthen the duration of the flu vaccine response.
  • Even though I have listed the 65+ FLUAD quadrivalent prices here, everyone in this age group is eligible for free flu shots if they are enrolled in Medicare, Part B.
  • In prior years, the CDC found that the FluMist quadrivalent nasal mist spray option was not as effective compared to the flu shot and it was pulled from the market. However, it is being offered at a few retailers and public health departments, with the disclaimer that certain populations should not use it.

If none of these retailers have locations by you, check out the CDCâs vaccines.gov flu shot vaccine locator website, which will provide a map of providers near you that offer flu shots.

What Kinds Of Vaccines Does Cvs Offer

  • Influenza : The flu vaccine is offered on a seasonal basis. Two different kinds are available. Four-strain flu vaccine protects against four strains of the virus for children and adults. The high-dose or senior-dose flu vaccine is for people age 65 and older.

  • Shingles: The shingles vaccine is recommended for people age 50 and older. It is given in two doses spaced 2 to 6 months apart.

  • COVID-19: The long-awaited coronavirus vaccine is finally available to all adults age 16 and older starting April 19 and earlier in many places. A vaccine for younger teens and children is expected later this year.

Can I Get A Free Flu Shot

Sometimes, but not always.

If you have insurance, you can get a discounted or free flu shot almost anywhere, including local pharmacies, chain pharmacies and your primary care doctor’s office.

If you go to urgent care, the shot itself might be free or discounted, but you’ll likely have to pay the copay. And at your doctor’s office, they’ll probably offer the shot for free, but you might have to pay for the office visit if it isn’t covered by your insurance — keep these things in mind when weighing your options.

Who Should Get The Flu Vaccine

Local 10 partners with Walgreens for annual Flu Shot Friday

The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of six months get a flu vaccine every year, especially people who are at a higher risk of complications from the flu. This includes people 65 years and over, people with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or certain other chronic conditions, pregnant women, and children under five. In addition to new babies, people who are allergic to eggs or another ingredient in the flu vaccine should talk to their doctor before getting a flu shot. So should people who have had Guillain-Barré Syndrome and anyone who thinks they are currently sick.

The Cost Of Other Vaccines

The cost of recommended vaccines varies depending on your insurance plan. If you have private insurance, you will likely get most of the recommended vaccines for free or with a small copayment.

If you are covered by Medicare Part B, you will be able to get some vaccines for little to no cost. The included vaccines are the flu shot, pneumococcal disease vaccine, and the hepatitis B vaccine if you have a pre-existing condition. If you are covered by Medicare part D, you will be able to get the shingles vaccine and the Tdap vaccine for little to no cost.

The cost of vaccines for adults who are covered by Medicaid varies significantly by state. If you are covered by Medicaid, you will likely access a flu shot for little to no cost. If you are not covered by insurance, the out-of-pocket cost of vaccines varies depending on the vaccine type and where you are vaccinated.

Below we outlined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and private sector costs for some adult vaccines. Note that the prices may be highest due to additional fees at your testing location.

What Routine Vaccines Are Covered By The Affordable Care Act

If you have insurance, you may not have to pay anything for certain vaccines. Many preventive care services are provided through health insurance plans at no out-of-pocket cost to you as part of the Affordable Care Act . This means you can receive certain services without a copay or coinsurance even if you have not met your deductible. Preventive care includes wellness visits, screenings, and routine vaccines.

When Is The Best Time To Get A Flu Shot

Generally speaking, the sooner the better as it takes two weeks for the vaccine to kick in. In North America, flu season usually starts around October and peaks between December and February, though its been known to go later. The CDC recommends getting vaccinated by early fall, but its never too late for the flu shot.

Does Medicare Cover Vaccines

How much does a flu shot cost? $14.99 at Costco, $31.99 at Walgreen

Medicare covers the flu and pneumococcal vaccines at 100% under Part B, along with the hepatitis B vaccine for those at higher risk. That means no out-of-pocket cost to the patient. A tetanus shot after experiencing a deep wound or burn also should be covered.

Medicare Part D plans should cover the shingles vaccine, but check with your plan. You may have to pay at least a portion out of pocket if you havent yet reached your deductible for the year . There may be a copay, depending on your plan.

MinuteClinic is a walk-in clinic that provides health screenings, treatment for common illnesses, and vaccinations for children, teens, and adults. Its located inside more than 1,100 CVS Pharmacy and Target locations in 33 states and Washington, D.C.

At MinuteClinic, the rules are a little different than at CVS Pharmacy. First, MinuteClinic doesnt offer COVID-19 vaccines. Many clinics still accept walk-ins, but some require appointments during the pandemic.

Lastly, unlike CVS Pharmacy, where pharmacists give shots, MinuteClinic is staffed by medical providers. That means a nurse practitioner or physician assistant will deliver your immunization instead of a pharmacist.

MinuteClinic accepts most insurance plans and lists its prices on its website. The prices represent the fee for a vaccine only. If you end up discussing other healthcare concerns during your vaccine appointment, you also may be charged for a separate medical visit.

The High Cost Of The ‘free’ Flu Shot

There’s a wide discrepancy in what insurers pay for the same flu shot.

This is a Kaiser Health News story.

In the Byzantine world of health care pricing, most people wouldnt expect that the ubiquitous flu shot could be a prime example of how the systems lack of transparency can lead to disparate costs.

The Affordable Care Act requires health insurers to cover all federally recommended vaccines at no charge to patients, including flu immunizations. Although people with insurance pay nothing when they get their shot, many dont realize that their insurers foot the bill and that those companies will recoup their costs eventually.

In just one small sample from one insurer, Kaiser Health News found dramatic differences among the costs for its own employees. At a Sacramento, Calif., facility, the insurer paid $85, but just a little more than half that at a clinic in Long Beach. A drugstore in Washington, D.C., was paid $32.

The wide discrepancy in what insurers pay for the same flu shot illustrates whats wrong with Americas health system, said Glenn Melnick, a health economist at the University of Southern California.

There is always going to be some variance in prices, but $85 as a negotiated price sounds ridiculous, he said.

Flu shots are relatively cheap compared with most health services, but considering the tens of millions of Americans who get vaccinated each year, those prices add up.
