What Is The Flu
Very briefly, the flu is a respiratory illness which is caused by Influenza Viruses A and B, and which is highly contagious.
In the first 3 -4 days of the illness an individual is at their most contagious, and may actually be spreading the flu to others even before they are aware that they have it themselves, and can continue to do so for a further 7 days after that.
For those of you who want to find out more, there is lots of information on the Centers for Disease and Prevention website here.
The groups of people at who are at the greatest risk from catching the flu are
- young children under the age of 5
- people with certain underlying health conditions
Is The Vaccine Safe
Again, the answer is yes. Don’t believe any of the vaccine myths you may have heard that the flu vaccine can cause serious illness. Hundreds of millions of people have received flu vaccines over the past 50 years with very few problems.
The most common side effects include redness, soreness, and/or swelling where the needle went in. You may also experience headaches, a slight fever, nausea, and muscle aches, which usually go away on their own. A very few people have allergic reactions to the vaccine. Symptoms can include trouble breathing, swelling, or a fast heartbeat. If you experience any of these, call 911.

Does Medicare Pay For Flu Shots At A Pharmacy
One flu shot per season, is covered at pharmacies by Medicare Part B, if the pharmacy is Medicare-enrolled and accepts assignment.
In the case of the flu and pneumonia vaccines you do not have to pay a deductible, and if the pharmacy accepts assignment you do not have to pay any coinsurance.
A pharmacy which is Medicare-enrolled and accepts assignment should bill Medicare directly for you.
Be sure to ask the pharmacist to have the information on the vaccination forwarded to your primary care doctor so that your records can be updated.
Does Medicare Pay For Flu Shots At Cvs
Medicare Part B does cover flu shots at CVS, as long as you are Medicare-enrolled in Medicare Part B, and you havent already had a shot in the same flu season.
Just like Walgreens and Walmart, CVS is Medicare-enrolled and accepts assignment.
CVS will bill Medicare for the flu shot, and again there will be no deductible or coinsurance for you to pay.

The Cost Of Other Vaccines
The cost of recommended vaccines varies depending on your insurance plan. If you have private insurance, you will likely get most of the recommended vaccines for free or with a small copayment.
If you are covered by Medicare Part B, you will be able to get some vaccines for little to no cost. The included vaccines are the flu shot, pneumococcal disease vaccine, and the hepatitis B vaccine if you have a pre-existing condition. If you are covered by Medicare part D, you will be able to get the shingles vaccine and the Tdap vaccine for little to no cost.
The cost of vaccines for adults who are covered by Medicaid varies significantly by state. If you are covered by Medicaid, you will likely access a flu shot for little to no cost. Flu Shots Now Available At Cvs Walmart Walgreens And Rite
In this Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020 file photo, a patient receives an influenza vaccine in Mesquite, Texas. Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens have started administering the flu shot for 2021. AP
While Americans are being highly encouraged to get a COVID-19 vaccine, pharmacies are looking ahead to the 2021 flu season.
CVS, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite Aid have announced they are accepting appointments for people to get a flu shot.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people age 6 months and older receive a flu shot before the end of October and that getting it is even more important during the pandemic.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the overall burden of respiratory illnesses is important to protect vulnerable populations at risk for severe illness, the healthcare system, and other critical infrastructure. Thus, healthcare personnel should use every opportunity during the influenza season to administer influenza vaccines to all eligible persons, the CDC said.
Walmart said it is offering a low-cost flu vaccine and a free COVID-19 vaccine that people can get at the same time.
Walmart said it also will continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while administering vaccines.
CVS said it has flu shots available at all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations.

Is The Vaccine Effective
Yes, although exactly how effective varies from year to year. Influenza viruses mutate so vaccine developers have to reformulate the vaccine every year to match the different virus strains.
Researchers typically look to the Southern Hemisphere and particularly Australia to see what this season’s viral “footprint” looks like. They use that information to determine how the Northern Hemisphere vaccine should be formulated, says Dr. Strange.
If the vaccine is well matched to the strains, you can expect the vaccine to be between 40 percent and 60 percent effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Even if you do get the flu, your chances of becoming severely ill are reduced if you’ve been vaccinated. That’s because your body has already mounted an immune response, says Dr. Strange.
Every year, the flu is responsible for 140,000 to 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 and 61,000 deaths, the CDC estimates. The vaccine may prevent as many as 6,300 deaths each year.

What Else Should I Know
Flu season is from October to May of each year, and the vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective, so go get one now. The flu comes in multiple strains, and researchers do their best to create a vaccine to protect us against the viruses that pose the highest risk each year.
“Dozens of influenza centers around the world are constantly conducting surveillance for influenza,” says Paz. “The World Health Organization takes all this data and considers other factors like the availability of vaccine viruses before it makes a recommendation on the composition of the influenza vaccine.”
Even though a vaccine isn’t completely fool-proof, it’s worth your time and energy. The vaccine can protect you against the flu and can reduce the severity and length should you be exposed.
While the vaccine won’t give you the flu, it’s not unusual to experience a little bit of nausea, headaches, fever, and muscle aches. These are small side effects compared to the flu, which in some cases can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization, and even death.
In addition to getting vaccinated, don’t forget to step up your handwashing game and get plenty of rest. The flu shot is just a way to help keep you and those around you healthy so you can be present for all the fun that fall has to offer.
