LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed January 18-24, 2009 Preteen Vaccine Week. This annual statewide awareness campaign is designed to highlight the benefits of immunizations and regular visits to a doctor for children between 11 and 12 years of age. There are more than 313,000 preteens between the ages of 11 and 12 living in Los Angeles County.
“High vaccine rates for infants and older children have virtually eliminated many vaccine-preventable diseases that once caused serious illness and even death for our youth,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “We encourage parents to help their preteens start the year off on a healthy course by scheduling a wellness visit with their child s doctor. Parents can discuss immunizations with the doctor, and gain tools to help encourage healthy habits such as eating a nutritious diet and exercising every day.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that 11- and 12-year-olds receive: “Meningococcal vaccine : to protect against certain serious types of bacterial meningitis and other related infections, “Tdap booster: to prevent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis , “Human Papillomavirus vaccine: to protect girls against cervical cancer, “A second chickenpox vaccine , “An annual flu vaccine.

Doses For People Who Are Immunocompromised
People who are immunocompromised are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 and should get additional doses as part of their primary series. After completing the primary series, people who are immunocompromised should follow these recommendations:

People 18 and older who got the Moderna vaccine and people 12 and older who have had the Pfizer vaccine: Get a third dose at least 28 days after second dose to complete the initial series. Get a booster at least three months later and a second booster at least four months after the first booster.

Children ages 5-11 years: Get a third dose at least 28 days after second dose to complete the initial series.

People who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine: Get an mRNA dose at least 28 days after first shot, followed by a third dose at least two months later.

Visalia Unified Offers Free Covid
Visalia Unified entered an agreement with COVID Clinic to provide teachers, staff and students with free COVID-19 screening, testing and vaccinations.
The district is opening four COVID Cottages at Mt. Whitney, Redwood, Golden West, and El Diamante locations starting Oct. 22. Each site will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“The services provided by COVID Clinic are efficient, convenient, and reliable to VUSD students and families,” Visalia Unified spokesperson Kim Batty said. “Individualized testing and vaccination services will be provided at no cost to students and school volunteers.”
COVID Clinic, a nonprofit registered by the California Department of Public Health, will supply and administer Visalia Unified with testing. Test results will be distributed to Elevated Health as well as the school district and test recipient.
The California Department of Public Health recommends students and staff have “access to a robust COVID-19 testing program as an available additional safety layer” against COVID-19.
Those interested in using the services provided by COVID Clinic can do so without making an appointment, Batty said. Insured employees, spouses and dependents have also been able to be tested through the Visalia Unified’s Health and Wellness Clinic.

Protect Yourself Against The Flu At Two Free City Flu Shot Clinics
The Pasadena Public Health Department recognizes the potential increased health threat of the flu season during the pandemic, so they have organized two free flu shot clinics around the city within the next two weeks starting on Wednesday, October 28.
On Wednesday and Thursday, October 29, Public Health staff will be at John Muir High School, at 1905 Lincoln Ave., to offer free seasonal flu vaccines to anyone aged 6 months and older. This clinic is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Wednesday, November 4, and Thursday, November 5, they will be at Pasadena High School, at 2925 E. Sierra Madre Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Children under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present during the clinic.
These flu shot clinics will be conducted with strict COVID-19 protocols in place. A face covering is required for everyone coming to the clinics, and physical distancing will be observed at all times.
Getting a flu vaccine at this time of the pandemic is more important than ever, the Public Health Department said.
By getting vaccinated against seasonal flu, you reduce the likelihood of getting the flu and transmitting it to others, an advisory from the Public Health Department said. You also reduce the likelihood that you will need to visit your doctor or an emergency room, saving healthcare resources for the care of those with COVID-19.
Flu vaccine supplies are limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis.

What to know when attending a Flu vaccination centre:
In all cases you should attend appointments alone unless you require the assistance of a carer. A carer may attend the appointment for support and both you and they should wear a face covering.
Follow the COVID-19 safety measures in place in each venue. This will include queue management, direction signs on floors and walls, and spacing of chairs.

Summary: Seattle Public Schools is offering vaccine clinics for Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children 3 years and older, and for adults.
Seattle Public Schools is partnering with Safeway Pharmacy to offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children 3 years and older, and for adults.
Please note: Safeway Pharmacy is vaccinating 3- and 4-year-old children at these SPS-hosted clinics. The pharmacy is not vaccinating children under 3 at this time.
The Pfizer vaccine for children under 5 is a three-dose series. SPS will offer clinics for:
Safeway will also have Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines and boosters for 5- to 11-year-olds and 12+ children and adults.
Pre-registration is encouraged. Please print and bring your consent form to the clinic.
Any person under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to provide consent. Anyone receiving a second dose or booster should bring their vaccination card with them to the clinic.
COVID-19 vaccines are free, safe, and effective. More than 80 percent of SPS students are fully vaccinated.

In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Swedish is hosting a FREE outdoor vaccination event for HPV, COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations at Ballard High School.
All vaccines are administered at no-cost. Seattle Public School students, faculty, families and community members are welcome.

Protect Your Family From The Flu
Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be offering flu shot clinics this fall from Sept 17 Oct 24. All SPS students, families and staff are welcome to attend. Flu shots will be free for those with insurance, including Apple Health. Appointments will be required.
To register for appointments, complete details, Flu Shot Clinic locations, transportation, accommodates and School-Based Health Center Flu Shots information visit SPS Health Services. Getting the flu shot in the next few weeks is optimal for getting through the winter flu season.
Flu shot clinics are held just inside the school and staff follow COVID protocols. Pre-enrolling for an appointment on the SVNA website is required however people who walk up may use their cell phone and a QR code to enroll. Flu shot clinics are open to any child and adult.
Six of these regional clinics will also offer COVID-19 vaccines for all students, staff and families who are twelve and up. COVID-19 clinics are in partnership with Safeway/Albertsons Pharmacy and Public Health Seattle King County.
