Are There Delays In The Distribution Of Influenza Vaccine

Kaiser Permanente holding drive-thru flu shot clinics on Sept. 12

Currently, influenza vaccine manufacturers are not reporting any expected delays in national flu vaccine supply or distribution this season.

Influenza vaccine production and distribution in the U.S. are primarily private sector endeavors. CDC encourages manufacturers and distributors to use a distribution strategy in which providers receive smaller shipments to allow as many providers as possible to begin vaccination activities early in the vaccination season. Ideally, the intervals between shipments are short so that each provider has a continuous supply and can continue vaccinating patients without interruption. While no important delays have been reported, in some places, robust demand for vaccine and supplies required to support flu vaccination efforts, like needles or syringes, may mean that some providers run out of vaccine or other supplies before their next shipment has arrived. An allocation system can initially limit the size of individual orders. However, as supplies become available in increasing numbers, supply is expected to catch up with demand. Additionally, because vaccine manufacturing has been extended to support the production of a record number of flu vaccine doses this year, providers are likely to receive more shipments throughout the season.

To make sure your provider has flu vaccine available, call ahead to confirm availability. There also may be other locations in your area that have vaccine available.

Kaiser Permanente Rolls Out Drive

With COVID-19 in the background, physicians are urging everyone to get a flu shot this year. Pictured, Brae Pate, a licensed vocational nurse, prepares a flu shot in the drive-through area for a member at Kaiser Richmond Medical Center during the first week of the flu vaccination program.

Kaiser Permanente is offering convenient drive-through and outdoor walk-up flu shots at its medical centers across Northern California to maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members can see flu shot clinic locations and operating hours on the Kaiser Permanente website.

At the drive-through clinics, members will simply put their arm out the car window, get the shot, and be off. Members visiting walk-up clinics will be spaced 6 feet apart to minimize contact with others.

In addition to the website, members can call the Kaiser Permanente Northern California flu hotline to get more information at 1-800-573-5811.

We are doing everything we possibly can and are committed to providing a very safe environment to get a vaccine, said Randy Bergen, MD, clinical lead for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Flu Vaccine Program.

The flu, with its fever, headache, and cough, can be deadly for the very young and the very old, and a sickly ordeal at the very least for those in between. In the 2019-2020 flu season, the CDC estimated that up to 56 million people in the U.S. got the flu, as many as 740,000 were hospitalized, and up to 62,000 died.

Are All Influenza Vaccines The Same

While all influenza vaccines will protect against the same 4 flu viruses, different influenza vaccines are manufactured differently and different preparations have different indications as licensed by the FDA. In particular, each vaccine is licensed for a specific age range. All recipients should receive a vaccine that is appropriate for their age. In addition, LAIV is not recommended for use in some populations.

People with egg allergies can receive any licensed, recommended age-appropriate influenza vaccine that is otherwise appropriate. People who have a history of severe egg allergy should be vaccinated in a medical setting, supervised by a health care provider who is able to recognize and manage severe allergic reactions. Two completely egg-free flu vaccine options are available: quadrivalent recombinant vaccine and quadrivalent cell-based vaccine.

When Is Your Flu Shot Free

Generally, if you have an HMO plan, you’ll need to visit a doctor or facility in your insurance network to get your free shot.

Kaiser Permanente members, for example, can get the vaccine at no extra cost at Kaiser facilities.

“We believe this is important to enable us to maintain records of when our members received this preventive care, especially for our must vulnerable populations – small children, the aged, and those with respiratory issues,” Kaiser spokeswoman Amy Thoma says in an e-mail.

Typically, if you have a PPO health plan, you also have the option of getting your flu shot at pharmacies and retail stores, such as Costco and Target.

Here’s where things can get sticky: If you go this route, you must make sure that the pharmacy you visit is in your insurance network.

Because the shingles vaccine requires two doses, if you have to pay full price around $400 total it may approach the $445 maximum Part D deductible that Medicare allows for 2021.

If thats the case, you may want to consider getting your vaccine early in the year. This way you dont have to worry about your deductible resetting in a new plan year soon after meeting it. You should discuss the risks and benefits of this strategy with your healthcare provider.

As far as going to CVS Pharmacy or CVS in Target to get your shingles vaccine, this is definitely an option. You can always call ahead or go online to schedule same-day appointments, or go in on a walk-in basis at many locations.

The High Cost Of The ‘free’ Flu Shot

There’s a wide discrepancy in what insurers pay for the same flu shot.

Health officials advise early flu shots amid concerns of possible shortage

This is a Kaiser Health News story.

In the Byzantine world of health care pricing, most people wouldnt expect that the ubiquitous flu shot could be a prime example of how the systems lack of transparency can lead to disparate costs.

The Affordable Care Act requires health insurers to cover all federally recommended vaccines at no charge to patients, including flu immunizations. Although people with insurance pay nothing when they get their shot, many dont realize that their insurers foot the bill and that those companies will recoup their costs eventually.

In just one small sample from one insurer, Kaiser Health News found dramatic differences among the costs for its own employees. At a Sacramento, Calif., facility, the insurer paid $85, but just a little more than half that at a clinic in Long Beach. A drugstore in Washington, D.C., was paid $32.

The wide discrepancy in what insurers pay for the same flu shot illustrates whats wrong with Americas health system, said Glenn Melnick, a health economist at the University of Southern California.

There is always going to be some variance in prices, but $85 as a negotiated price sounds ridiculous, he said.

Flu shots are relatively cheap compared with most health services, but considering the tens of millions of Americans who get vaccinated each year, those prices add up.
