Personal Stories About Getting A Flu Vaccine

These stories are based on information gathered from health professionals and consumers. They may be helpful as you make important health decisions.

I am in very good health for my age. Still, I get a flu shot every year. Why take chances? I’ve seen too many friends end up in the hospital because they didn’t take the flu seriously. I urge my kids to get it too, because you never know how nasty this year’s flu strain might be.

Bert, age 68

My grandmother is in a nursing home, and I visit her every couple of weeks. I wouldn’t want to risk giving her the flu, so I’m going to get the flu vaccine.

Betsy, age 17

At my age, I don’t see any reason to get a flu vaccine. I’m very strong, and I hardly ever get sick. I’m not worried about getting the flu.

Quincy, age 25

Flu Shots With Kaiser Permanente Washington: No

During the 2020-21 flu season, many schools were closed, and people were staying home to avoid the spread of COVID-19. This year, however, health officials are bracing for a more severe flu season. Most schools have reopened as have several businesses. People are also traveling and going out more. So this year more than ever, anyone who can get a flu shot needs to do so as soon as possible especially as the COVID-19 pandemic is still under way. In addition, the immunity you get from a flu shot only lasts about a year, and the virus changes, which means new flu vaccines are created annually.

Both the COVID-19 and flu vaccines are the best ways of protecting people against diseases and illnesses and both can reduce the risk of illness or hospitalization. Getting a vaccine helps your body to produce antibodies , usually after about 2 weeks. Your body will then be able to recognize and fight the disease if youre exposed to it later.

Kaiser Permanente is offering no-cost, walk-in flu shots for members at all of our medical facilities, no appointment needed. Were also offering flu shots to every member during their scheduled care appointments and, for a limited time only , our members may also get a flu shot at multiple retail locations, including:

  • Albertsons
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart

The Highly Contagious Omicron Variant Is Spreading Rapidly Throughout The Country

The omicron variant is causing a surge in demand for COVID-19 testing at Kaiser Permanente and other health care organizations. Rest assured that were doing everything we can to meet this high and growing demand. Still, there may be longer than usual wait times for testing at our facilities, even if members have an appointment and test result turnaround times are presently exceeding 72 hours.

Given these challenges, Kaiser Permanente is prioritizing testing for those who are ill. We are currently testing members who have symptoms and members who are coming in for certain clinical procedures. Members who do not meet these criteria but need COVID-19 tests for other reasons should not go to urgent care or the emergency department if specifically seeking testing. We must maintain access at those locations for the health and safety of members who need immediate care. FDA-approved, at-home tests can be used instead, and other testing locations are available.

Note: Many of these facilities will bill Kaiser Permanente directly, so members may not have to pay anything out of pocket. If they are charged, Kaiser Permanente will reimburse them for the cost of the test.
