The pharmacy counter at Target has been suffering mightily since the retailer sold its pharmacy business to CVS last year. That would explain the signage youll see around the pharmacy with the CVS logo!
But the big change brought with it reports of inconsistent customer service, less-than-friendly staff and larger out-of-pocket costs.
So the pharmacy department has a strategy to get you back to their counter this fall: A free $5 gift card when you roll up your sleeve for a flu shot!
The gift card doesnt expire and can be used at a Target location other than the one where you get the shot. Offer void in Arkansas, New Jersey and New York.

Vaccination Information In A County Near You
As of December 3, 2020, in the United States, two COVID-19 vaccines have submitted applications for emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration . If granted, the vaccine could arrive in Ohio in limited supply for distribution to initial critical populations in December 2020.
Operation Warp Speed is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense to help develop, produce, and distribute millions of vaccine doses for COVID-19 as quickly as possible while ensuring that vaccines are safe and effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is focused on vaccine planning, working closely with the Ohio Department of Health and other state partners to prepare for vaccination availability.
Getting us through the pandemic requires using all the tools available. Vaccines boost your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed. Other steps, like masks and social distancing, help reduce your chance of being exposed to or spreading the virus. Together, the coming COVID-19 vaccines and proper prevention measures will offer the best protection from COVID-19.
Multiple COVID-19 vaccines are under development. As of November 24, 2020, large-scale clinical trials are in progress or being planned for five COVID-19 vaccines in the United States. As of December 3, 2020, two vaccines have applied for emergency use authorization from the FDA.

Flu Shot Effectiveness Rate & Time Before It Takes Effect
I have often wondered how long it takes for a flu shot to take effect. According to the CDC, it generally takes about 2 weeks for the flu vaccine to protect you from catching the flu virus.
The flu shot effectiveness rate is widely disputed. There are many variables age, severity of a virus in a given season, new strains, unreported cases, and even effectiveness by manufacturer that make it hard to nail down an effectiveness rate. Ive seen effectiveness rates reported as anywhere from 40% to 90%.
Regardless of effectiveness rate, there is no risk in getting the flu from a flu shot, so sign me up. It is recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot. And it is recommended that children between 6 months and 8 years of age get 2 shots per season.
Protect Yourself And Those Close To You
The flu hasnt gone away. We may have escaped it last year while avoiding the coronavirus. Getting your flu shot provides some protection for about six months.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a great number of patients to seek care in emergency rooms and immediate care centers nationwide. Getting the flu shot doesnt mean you wont catch the flu, but it will reduce your chance of having symptoms that land you in a health care providers office.
Since it is possible to catch flu and COVID-19 simultaneously, you also want to prevent overwhelming your immune system by fighting two viruses at the same time.
While the viruses that cause the flu each year tend to mutate and change through the season from the time the vaccine is developed, the flu vaccine typically reduces the risk of needing medical care for flu by about 40% to 60%.
The COVID-19 vaccines provide more than 90% protection against serious illness.
If you are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine or a booster shot, its safe to get both at once and in separate arms if possible, according to the CDC.

Kroger Offering $1 Million Payouts Free Groceries To Encourage Covid
The parent company of Ralphs and Food 4 Less is offering people a chance to win $1 million and one-year supplies of free groceries to incentivize more Americans to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Kroger announced that people who get their vaccine from one of its pharmacies could win one of five $1 million payouts and 50 could win free groceries for a year.
The effort is part of a collaboration with the Biden Administration to push Americans to get vaccinated and meet the goal of having at least 70% of U.S. adults with at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose by July 4, according to the company.
The faster we reach community immunity, the sooner we can all get back to enjoying backyard barbecues, live music and gathering for special occasions, Krogers chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen said in a statement.
Several Ralphs pharmacies are offering the COVID-19 vaccine in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. A list of locations can be found here once a zip code is entered.
As of last week, Kroger Health had distributed more than 4.6 million COVID-19 vaccines nationwide.
Flu Shot Price Notes:
- The standard quadrivalent flu shot is designed to protect against four different flu strain viruses two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses and is now the standard offered everywhere.
- The trivalent flu shot option is not being carried yet by any retailer this year.
- The FLUAD quadrivalent flu shot is recommended for those age 65 and over, as it includes an adjuvant designed to strengthen, broaden, and lengthen the duration of the flu vaccine response.
- Even though I have listed the 65+ FLUAD quadrivalent prices here, everyone in this age group is eligible for free flu shots if they are enrolled in Medicare, Part B.
- In prior years, the CDC found that the FluMist quadrivalent nasal mist spray option was not as effective compared to the flu shot and it was pulled from the market. However, it is being offered at a few retailers and public health departments, with the disclaimer that certain populations should not use it.
If none of these retailers have locations by you, check out the CDCs vaccines.gov flu shot vaccine locator website, which will provide a map of providers near you that offer flu shots.

Flu Shots Provide Protection For About Six Months
Getting the flu shot earlier in the season provides some protection through the spring and since the vaccine takes a couple weeks to build up antibodies, its a good idea to get it before the virus is spreading.
Getting vaccinated may be even more important, since few of us built up any natural immunity last season while protecting ourselves against COVID-19.
With far less social distancing, mask-wearing and virtual work and school this past year, the stage may be set for a very serious season for viruses, such as respiratory syncytial virus and the flu.
Getting the flu vaccine provides about 60% protection for your body, meaning it will decrease your chance of getting severely sick and decrease chance of needing medical treatment for the flu. The vaccine helps give your body information on how to fight off the infection. Getting a flu vaccine also helps protect the people around you.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you get your flu shot by the end of October each year. But if you missed that time frame, its not too late.
Dont put it off if youre already at your health care providers office or pharmacy.
The flu vaccine provides its protection for about six months, according to Monalisa M. Tailor, M.D., an internal medicine physician with Norton Community Medical Associates Barret.
The vaccine takes about two weeks to build up the antibodies in your system, so you dont want to delay it too far into the season, Dr. Tailor said.
