How To Avoid Getting And Spreading The Flu:

• Get the flu shot every year
• Avoid large crowds and stay home when youre sick
• Wash your hands well and often with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue out immediately. Wash hands afterwards. Cough in your upper sleeve if you dont have a tissue
• Don’t touch your face
• Clean surfaces and shared items

Important! You may not know that you have become infected with the flu virus. Adults infected with the flu can infect other people one day before they even have symptoms and up to five days after becoming sick. Children and people with weakened immune systems may be able to spread the virus for even longer.

You Call The Shots: Free Flu Vaccines

Beginning Monday, September 19th, McKinley Health Center will launch their flu campaign, You Call The Shots . Students who have paid the health service fee and benefit eligible state employees and retirees will be able to get their FREE flu shot. McKinley Health Centers onsite flu clinic will be open Monday Friday, 9:00am-3:30pm. A number of outreach locations will also begin on Tuesday, Sept. 20th. Be sure to check out our flu outreach schedule for additional times and locations. You will need a form of ID . For faculty, staff and retirees they will need to also present their health insurance card from a state-sponsored health plan.

Flu Vaccine: Regional Campus Information

To help ensure the health and safety of the UIC community, the university is strongly encouraging all students, faculty and staff who are on campus this fall to be vaccinated for seasonal flu.

Peoria

UIC students in Peoria can receive a free flu shot on campus in Room A100-2, UICOMP:

Students can simply go to the designated area to receive a free flu shot. Bring your student I.D. and proof of insurance with you.

If arrangements are needed for a different time, call 309-672-4977 to request an appointment. Identify yourself as a student and say that you need your yearly flu shot.

Quad Cities

The Quad Cities campus is home to a UIC College of Nursing graduate program. All working nurses should receive their flu vaccine through their employer or another source.

Rockford

UIC students in Rockford can receive a free flu shot on campus at the Commons in the Coffee Corner:

• Mondays: Oct. 11, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25, noon to 1:30 p.m.
• Wednesdays: Oct. 13, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, noon to 1:30 p.m and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Fridays: Oct. 15, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Employees and retirees can obtain a flu shot on Oct. 14., noon to 2 p.m., at UI Health Mile Square Health Center L.P. Johnson Rockford. Pre-registration is required and employees must have a state insurance plan to qualify.

Springfield

UIC students and employees in Springfield can receive a free flu shot on campus at the PAC restaurant:

Urbana

When To Seek Care For The Flu

Most people with the flu do not need medical care. However, if you are at a high risk for severe illness or you become very sick, you should contact your primary care provider.

Usually, flu and other respiratory illnesses begin with mild or moderate symptoms. In these instances, FastCare®, walk-in clinics, urgent care or your primary care physicians office are ready to treat you. Another option is a virtual clinic visit, where a board-certified physician can provide care through your phone, tablet or laptops webcam.

Anyone experiencing the following symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Persistent pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
• Persistent dizziness, confusion, inability to rouse
• Fever or cough that improve but then return or worsen
• Worsening of chronic medical conditions

Champaign County Health Officials Urge Residents To Get New Vaccine Booster

URBANA Distribution of the new bivalent COVID-19 booster began last week across Illinois, including in Champaign County.

The bivalent booster offers more protection against the Omicron variant because it combines the original strain of COVID-19 with the most recent one, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Previous boosters only protected against the SARS variant.

Champaign health experts said residents should get the new booster.

Doing so is especially important for college students to get updated boosters because they make up such a large share of the local population, said Christopher Brooke, a virologist and vaccine expert at the University of Illinois.

The protection conferred by the older vaccines and boosters isnt the same as it was a year or two ago because the virus has changed, he said. So the immune response that the older vaccines and boosters trigger doesnt recognize this new evolved variant, as well.

Thats whats the huge benefit of the new bivalent booster. Its going to elicit an immune response that better recognizes the viruses that were actually seeing now, so it should be more protective.

Brooke said he doesnt recommend the booster for those who have had COVID-19 in the past six months because they have already been exposed to the Omicron variant.

Where To Get A Flu Shot

During flu season you can get a free flu shot from:

• participating pharmacies

Children six moths to four years old can get their flu shot from a doctor, nurse practitioner or local public health unit. Children under five years old cannot get a flu shot at a pharmacy.

Where Can I Safely Get A Flu Shot

We encourage you to get a flu shot wherever its convenient for you. Many local pharmacies and retailers offer walk-in vaccinations. You can also receive your flu shot through the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network through one of the options listed below.

Before You Arrive

• When you come in for a flu shot, you need to wear a mask. We also recommend a short-sleeved shirt.
• We accept most insurance plans. Before you come in, please check with your insurance regarding coverage.

You do NOT need to have a provider at a location or be a patient at a Froedtert & MCW location to get your flu shot at any of the options below. Existing patients who have a primary care appointment can ask their provider about a flu shot at the time of their visit.

Free Community Flu Shot Clinics Offered By Froedtert & The Medical College Of Wisconsin

WISCONSIN — Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network is partnering with community organizations to offer free flu clinics in the city of Milwaukee to anyone over the age of 18.

They say this year, more than ever, it’s important to avoid getting the flu by washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, staying out of crowds and getting a flu shot.

The following free flu clinics will be available:

• Jewish Community Pantry
• 2900 West Center Street, Milwaukee WI, 53210
• Thursday, Sept. 30 and Thursday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
• Two outdoor flu clinics during the drive-thru food pantry

Froedtert & MCM health network is also offering flu vaccination clinics at its health centers located in Milwaukee at the Good Hope Health Center and McKinley Health Center. Most insurance plans are accepted.

How Flu Virus Spreads

The flu virus most often spreads through coughs and sneezes by an infected person when respiratory fluid becomes airborne. You can also get the flu by touching a surface or object, such as a table or a doorknob, that has the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

You can pass the flu on to someone else before you show symptoms or after you know you are sick. Flu symptoms begin one to four days after the virus is in the body. According to the CDC, a healthy adult who becomes sick may infect others one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. Children and some people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for more than seven days.

If you have the flu, it is best to stay home from work or school. Try to rest and recover. This will help prevent the virus from spreading to others.

How To Treat The Flu

The flu, like the common cold, is a virus. It starts suddenly and usually develops with a bad sore throat, body aches, high fever and, at times, a runny nose.

If you think you may have the flu, talk to your doctor. The flu can last for 10 to 14 days, and antibiotics cannot make it go away. Get plenty of rest and make sure you drink extra fluids to stay hydrated.

There are antiviral medications that can shorten the duration of the flu, if the medications are given early. Antiviral medications are important in controlling the flu, but they are not a substitute for the vaccination.

What Viruses Do Vaccines Protect Against

There are many flu viruses and they are constantly changing. The composition of U.S. flu vaccines is reviewed annually and updated to match circulating flu viruses. Flu vaccines protect against the three or four viruses that research suggests will be most common.

For the 2022-2023 Influenza season, McKinley Health Center will offer a four-component vaccine containing protection against the following Influenza A and Influenza B viruses:

• an A/Victoria/2570/2019 pdm09-like virus
• a B/Austria/1359417/2021-like virus and
• a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus .

McKinley Health Center is using the Fluzone 22-23 and Fluarix 22-23 influenza vaccines during the 2022-2023 flu season. Both vaccines are quadrivalent.
