Prepare For The Flu Season

Flu and COVID-19 shots available at upcoming Sioux Falls clinics

Flu shots are now available at clinics throughout Trinity Health.

Beginning on September 25, flu shot clinics sprung up at several locations within Trinity Health, including FirstCare Walk-In Clinic and Trinitys pediatric department, both located at Health Center Medical Arts Trinity Health South Ridge Health Center Town & Country, Suite 104 your primary care providers office and Trinity Healths rural clinics.

Flu vaccinations can help reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , an average of 5 to 20 percent of the United States population gets the flu, with tens of thousands under hospitalization, and thousands dying from flu-related illness.

The North Dakota Department of Health urges everyone six months of age and older to get vaccinated against the flu. Flu can be particularly severe for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with a compromised immune system, but the flu can make anyone very sick, the NDDoH stated in a past press release.

The flu season starts in October and as the flu shot takes about two weeks to activate, it is a good idea to get your flu shot sooner rather than later.

Typically, the flu hits hardest between December and February, but can last in April and even May, explained Terry Altringer, clinical coordinator of Trinity Healths pharmacy department. Thats why we want people to get it by the end of October to obtain maximal protection.

Flu Shots Are Critical In The Workplace

The CDC estimates that employees in the U.S. miss 17 million workdays in a typical year due to flu-related illnesses. This results in an estimated cost of $7 billion in sick day pay and lost productivity.

As an employer, when you host an on-site flu shot clinic, you are not only investing in the health and wellbeing of your employees, you are preventing the need to leave work to get the shot as well as preventing sick days caused by the flu. On-site flu clinics have been proven to reduce absenteeism and decrease lost productivity due to illness.

Trinity Health Will Offer Flu Shots

Trinity Health will offer flu shots on a walk-in basis and by appointment at several of its Minot clinics starting in mid-October, according to information from Trinity Health. The vaccine will also be available at Trinitys rural health clinics.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the yearly flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older as the most important step to protect oneself against the flu.

Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Casmiar Nwaigwe said this years influenza vaccines have been updated to better match viruses expected to be circulating in the U.S. But regardless of how well-matched they are, a flu shot is worthwhile.

Its always a bit of a guessing game, and youre never going to achieve a 100% match, Nwaigwe said. But even when the match isnt perfect, it still offers protection. If you do get sick its likely to be less severe and not last as long.

Nwaigwe recommends getting a shot as soon as vaccine is available. It takes about two weeks to reach maximum protection so rather than play catch up I would get a flu shot early and not wait until there is high flu activity, he said.

Walk-in sites for adult flu shots are FirstCare Walk-In Clinic at Health Center Medical Arts, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Trinity Health South Ridge, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.- noon and Health Center Town & Country, Suite 104, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Flu Shots Available Soon

JAMESTOWN, N.D. Central Valley Health District wants the public to know that large community flu shot clinics will be held in early October at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Flu vaccine is beginning to arrive at our office, states Robin Iszler, Unit Administrator. We will have both high dose and regular dose flu shots available in October.

CVHD will be providing flu vaccinations at Jamestown Public Schools, as well as the county schools located in Stutsman and Logan Counties. Business flu shot clinics will also be available for local businesses interested in having that service on-site.

Central Valley typically provides approximately 3,000 flu vaccinations in the community each year, reported Iszler. We have already been receiving calls regarding the availability of flu vaccine and we are directing community members to get their flu shot at our large community events, rather than at our office due to limited space.

This year, CVHD be using an online registration system to help eliminate wait time at vaccination clinics. Individuals will now be able to register for an appointment prior to arrival on the CVHD website. On-site registration will be available for those who do not have access to a computer or mobile device.

Flu vaccinations will also be available at local pharmacies and clinics in Jamestown.

Clinic dates will soon be available on the CVHD Facebook page and website at www.centralvalleyhealth.org. For more information, please call CVHD at 252-8130.

State To Use Indianapolis Motor Speedway To Mass Vaccinate Kids Age 5 And Up

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb receives his Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine during the state’s first mass vaccination clinic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Friday, March 5, 2021, in Indianapolis. The state health department said nearly 17,000 people had filled up four days of appointments for the speedway clinic.

The Indiana Department of Health announced this week it will use the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway to vaccinate children ages 5 and up, as soon as the FDA grants the emergency authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for this age group.

That authorization is expected to come next week.

Indiana opened the racetrack as a mass vaccination clinic March 5, with Gov. Eric Holcomb rolling onto the track in the passenger seat of an SUV to roll up his arm to get the Johnson & Johnson shot.

Later that day at a press conference on the track, he said the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, famously known for the Indianapolis 500 the greatest spectacle in racing is now going to be forever known as the greatest spectacle in vaccination.

At a press conference this week, Dr. Lindsay Weaver, the Indiana Department of Healths chief medical officer, said Indiana is getting 200,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to use to begin to vaccinate kids ages 5-11.

The department announced the mass vaccination clinic at the racetrack will now be extended to Nov. 20, with adjusted hours that seem designed to accommodate school schedules.
