Influenza season is here in Southeast Louisiana, and Stacy R. Newman, M.D., of North Oaks Infectious Disease cautions against taking chances against this easily spread respiratory virus.
While frequent handwashing, maintaining safe physical distancing practices and covering coughs or sneezes will decrease the risk, influenza vaccination is by far your best defense in preventing the flu this season, according to Newman.
North Oaks Urgent Care clinics in Hammond, Ponchatoula and Walker are offering flu shots for adults and children, age 6 months and older. A high-dose vaccine for senior adults, age 65 and older, also is available. Reserve your appointment here. North Oaks Urgent Care hours of operation are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. every day of the week.

During flu season you can get a free flu shot from:
- your doctor or nurse practitioner
- participating pharmacies
Children six moths to four years old can get their flu shot from a doctor, nurse practitioner or local public health unit. Children under five years old cannot get a flu shot at a pharmacy.

North Shore Flu Clinics Will Start Vaccinating On Oct 25
With influenza season fast approaching, Vancouver Coastal Health is recommending people get a flu shot this year now more than ever.
On the North Shore, public health flu clinics will start vaccinating on Oct. 25, according to VCH.
Influenza is a virus which causes an infection of the upper airway and can include symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and cough all symptoms which can look similar to symptoms associated with COVID-19.
To decrease your chance of needing a COVID-19 test or having to self-isolate, Vancouver Coastal Health highly recommends getting a flu shot, stated a release from VCH.
Flu shots are recommended for everyone six months of age and older, according to the health authority. VCH is recommending everyone get one this year because the symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu can look so similiar.
Getting a flu shot will look a little different this year. In an effort to promote physical distancing and reduce wait times to get a flu shot, people are encouraged to book an appointment to get vaccinated through vch.ca/flu.
Family doctors, walk-in clinics, pharmacies and urgent and primary care centres will still be providing flu shots this year, noted VCH.
Appointments at Vancouver Coastal Health public health clinics can be booked now. The three North Shore clinics are:

- Parkgate flu clinic 3625 Banff Court
- Lynn Valley flu clinic 870 Lynn Valley Rd.

- High dose flu vaccines can only be provided for patients who are 65 and older.

Do I Need To Go To The Emergency Room If I Am Only A Little Sick
No. The emergency room should be used for people who are very sick. You should not go to the emergency room if you are only mildly ill.
If you have emergency warning signs of flu sickness, you should go to the emergency room. If you get sick with flu symptoms and are at higher risk of flu complications or you are concerned about your illness, call your health care provider for advice.
People experiencing any of these warning signs should obtain medical care right away.

- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish lips or face
- Ribs pulling in with each breath
- Severe muscle pain
- Not alert or interacting when awake
- In children less than 12 weeks, any fever
