Clinics To Change How Vaccines Are Given During The Epidemic

A double-whammy of COVID-19 and the upcoming flu season has health professionals worried there will be a large surge in hospitalizations and that some people could contract both diseases.

They are urging people to get vaccinated for influenza, while preparing to administer the vaccines in ways they haven’t done before.

“It’s never good to have two infections circulating at the same time that affect the lungs,” Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, Stanford professor of pediatric infectious diseases and health research and policy, said during a recent interview. “Clearly, we are worried. Influenza is another pandemic. It’s a pretty significant health problem.

“This is a year when you clearly want to get a vaccine,” Maldonado said.

This fall and winter “are going to be probably one of the most difficult times that we’ve experienced in American public health,” Robert Redfield director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned during a July webinar with the Journal of the American Medical Association.

At Palo Alto Medical Foundation , Dr. William Isenberg, chief quality and safety officer for parent organization Sutter Health, said teams are tracking the flu virus. There is cause for concern when two major viruses attacking similar body systems converge.

PAMF plans to start rolling out its vaccinations sometime after Labor Day. The best time to get that shot is from September through December.

When Should I Get A Flu Shot

It is best to get a flu vaccine before flu viruses begin spreading in your community, so you have begun developing influenza antibodies to protect you against contracting the flu.

The CDC recommends that you get a flu shot by the end of October, but its not too late to benefit from some level of protection even as late as January.

NOTE: COVID-19 vaccines and flu vaccines may be administered at the same visit. You may receive both vaccines safely, with no wait time in between. However, at Michigan Medicine, the two vaccines must each be scheduled.

Palo Alto Medical Foundation purchased about 25,000 doses of FluMist for PAMF patients this year compared to only 10,000 doses last year.

The 2014-2015 flu season marks the first time the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended the nasal spray vaccine over the shot, after clinical trials showed children have a stronger immune response to the nasal-spray vaccine. Although the FluMist vaccine is only recommended over the shot for those aged two through eight, it is effective for healthy individuals up to age 49.

Last winter’s flu-vaccine shortage brought chaos and anxiety to the nation’s already strained health-care system. But it didn’t worry anyone at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation clinic in Silicon Valley, Calif. While the elderly and infirm lined up outside hospitals to get shots on a first-come, first-serve basis, the doctors in Palo Alto sat down at their new computers and searched through the electronic medical records of their 220,000 patients. Within a few hours, they had a list of the youngest, oldest and sickest, and knew exactly how many shots they would need. After sending their surplus doses back to anxious regional-health officials, the clinic mailed letters to the high-risk patients asking them to come in for vaccines. It was a sensible and orderly process, and one that was wholly remarkable to the doctors who had spent most of their careers practicing medicine on paper. “In the old days, estimating who the high-risk patients were and how many doses we needed would have been total guesswork,” says public-affairs director Jill Antonides.
