What Vaccines Protect Against Flu

4-Year-Old Mistakenly Given COVID Vaccine At Fitchburg CVS Instead Of Flu Shot

For the 2020-2021 flu season, CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.

  • Flu shots can be given to your child 6 months and older.
  • The nasal spray vaccine can be given to people 2 through 49 years of age. However, certain people with underlying medical conditions should not get the nasal spray vaccine.

Your childs doctor will know which vaccines are right for your child.

Talk To Your Pharmacist Or Nurse Practitioner Prior To Your Vaccination

Before administering your vaccination, the immunizing pharmacist or nurse practitioner will want to know about any medical conditions you might have, any previous reactions to vaccines, and your medication history if you fill your prescriptions at another pharmacy. They will also be able to advise on any side effects that may result from your vaccination.

When Should My Child Get A Flu Vaccine

Doctors recommend that your child get a flu vaccine every year in the fall, starting when he or she is 6 months old. Some children 6 months through 8 years of age may need 2 doses for best protection.

  • CDC recommends a flu vaccine by the end of October, before flu begins spreading in your community. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later.
  • Children 6 months through 8 years getting a flu vaccine for the first time, and those who have only previously gotten one dose of flu vaccine, should get two doses of vaccine. The first dose should be given as soon as vaccine becomes available.
  • If your child previously got two doses of flu vaccine , he only needs one dose of flu vaccine this season.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone ages six months and older. Pregnant women should get a flu vaccine during each pregnancy. Flu vaccines given during pregnancy help protect both the mother and her baby from flu.

Cvs Pharmacy Kicks Off Senior Days Offering Flu Shots

CVS Pharmacy is set to host a series of Senior Days to give people over age 55 years old quick and easy access to the annual flu vaccine.

The Senior Days, which will be held every Thursday throughout the month of September, will be held at 20 CVS HealthHUB locations in the Tampa-area. During Senior Days, patients will be greeted by pharmacy staff, have access to educational information and receive their vaccination from a dedicated immunizer.

Getting an annual flu shot, along with other important vaccines, such as COVID-19, shingles and pneumonia, if eligible, is important for avoiding illness and protecting the overall health of the community, especially for seniors who are at greater risk of developing severe flu-related illnesses, the company said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that people over age 65 years old receive either the higher dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine, both of which help the body elicit a better immune response to the vaccine. CVS Pharmacy is offering both the high dose and adjuvanted flu vaccines this season and will have both types of vaccine available during the Senior Day events.

While patients can always schedule an immunization appointment ahead of time online or via the CVS Pharmacy app, during Senior Days, patients over age 55 years old are able to simply walk in and request a flu vaccination.

The events will be held every Thursday in September.

How Does Flu Spread

Flu spreads mainly by droplets when people who have flu talk, cough, or sneeze, and these droplets land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or are inhaled. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

People can spread flu to others from one day before they have symptoms to 5-7 days after they get sick. This can be longer in children and people who are very sick.

Alternatives To The Pediatrician

Let’s say you miss the flu shot boat at your child’s doctor’s office and need to have your child vaccinated elsewhere. Some places to consider:

  • Your local or state health department is often your best bet, so start looking there.
  • The American Lung Association website has a user-friendly tool for finding local outlets for flu shots. Simply enter your zip code and nearby options will pop up. In addition, the tool will give you helpful information about each site, such as the days and times it’s open.
  • Vaccinefinder.org works in much the same way as the ALA siteplug in your address or zip code and you’ll get a list of local places offering flu vaccines. You can use this tool to find locations for other vaccines as well, from chickenpox to shingles to HPV .
  • Pharmacies, grocery stores, community centers, churches, office parks, shopping malls, schools, and other venues sometimes offer flu shots. Keep an eye out for advertisements and notices.

Note that many places that offer flu shots outside a doctor’s office may not give them to young children, especially kids under 4, so call ahead. This restriction may be waived if your pediatrician will write a prescription for your child to have a flu shot.
