Flu Shots Are Still Important This Year Get Yours Free At One Of These Locations
Last year’s flu season may have seemed pretty mild, as mask-wearing and social distancing helped to reduce the spread of both flu and COVID-19. But with flu season on the horizon again, and many hospitals already overwhelmed by the Delta variant, we need to be especially vigilant this year and that means getting your flu shot! Experts recommend getting the flu vaccine as early as possible, starting in September, before the virus begins to spread in the fall and winter. Even if you’re late to the party, though, it’s better to get the shot than skip it altogether.
None of us want to spend more time in a clinic or doctor’s office than we need to, which is why a quick, easy, and free flu shot at a retail location might be your best bet. A number of pharmacies, box stores, and supermarkets offer in-store flu shots for free for most people. In many cases, you don’t even need an appointment. For your convenience, we’ve put together a list of some popular locations offering free flu shots this year. Just remember to check availability at your location before heading out!

Who Should Get A Flu Vaccine
Everyone 6 months and older should receive a yearly flu vaccine, with rare exceptions. The flu vaccine causes your body to make antibodies that fight the flu, decreasing your risk of becoming sick with the flu. Since the viruses in the vaccine are not live, they cannot cause the flu. The flu vaccine is recommended annually, as immunity decreases over time. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be effective, so it is important to get the vaccine before the flu starts spreading in your area.

Get Your Flu Shot and COVID-19 Vaccine at the Same Time
As the coming flu season approaches and as we continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, now is the time to get both shots. Luckily, this years flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine can be administered during the same visit.
Not the Season to Be Sick
With the continued rise of the COVID-19 Delta variant and the unpredictability of a contagious flu season, coming down with flu-like symptoms could mean having the flu, COVID-19, or the possibility of both at the same time. Due to the toll COVID-19 has taken on hospital availability, its important to stay healthy and minimize your risk of having a severe case of either virus.
Get Them Together and Get Protected
The CDC has stated that receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot during the same visit is safe. Its important to note that each is its own separate shot and each may have minor side effects, but getting them during the same visit will save you time. As school and more in-person occasions begin, and we prepare for the cooler weather and the holiday season thats ahead, now is the time to schedule your COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot appointment.
Here’s What To Know Before You Go

Putting off getting your flu shot or other vaccines because you don’t have time for a doctor’s appointment? The next time you pick up a few things at the drugstore or grocery store, consider updating your vaccinations at the pharmacy.
Pharmacists are trained in immunization technique and are well versed in how to administer shots, according to Carmen Catizone, D.Ph., executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy .
“In fact, today, more patients are receiving their vaccinations from pharmacists than other healthcare providers,” says Catizone.
CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and other chains and some independent pharmacies offer more than the flu shotthey typically also administer other immunizations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , including vaccines against pneumonia, polio, shingles, Tdap , and varicella .
In addition, many also offer travel immunizations for meningitis, typhoid, yellow fever, and other diseases.
An added perk: CVS, Walgreens, and other chains offer loyalty programs that earn you reward points towards discounts on other store purchases. Sign up online or at the pharmacy counter.
