Nearly three quarters of Americans say they plan to get a flu shot this year, with 45 percent planning on getting their vaccine at a retail pharmacy

WOONSOCKET, R.I. CVS Health is reminding Americans that as the country continues to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic it is more important than ever to stay current with vaccinations and other routine health care needs. By getting a flu shot this fall and taking other proactive measures to improve general health and immunity, individuals and families can protect themselves against seasonal flu and help safeguard the overall health of the community.

According to a survey commissioned by CVS Health Flu Intention Survey, commissioned by CVS Health in June 2021 and conducted among a general population of U.S. consumers, consumers intention to get vaccinated against seasonal flu increased five percentage points from June 2020 to June 2021, with 71 percent of those surveyed saying they definitely or likely will get a flu shot this season. In addition, 45 percent of consumers surveyed said they planned to get a flu shot at a retail pharmacy, the most preferred destination cited, followed by a doctors office .

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals make plans to get vaccinated early in the fall, before flu season begins, and ideally no later than the end of October.

Video and photo assets from MinuteClinic and CVS Pharmacy are available in the CVS Health Media Gallery.

    The Cost Of Other Vaccines

The cost of recommended vaccines varies depending on your insurance plan. If you have private insurance, you will likely get most of the recommended vaccines for free or with a small copayment.

If you are covered by Medicare Part B, you will be able to get some vaccines for little to no cost. The included vaccines are the flu shot, pneumococcal disease vaccine, and the hepatitis B vaccine if you have a pre-existing condition. If you are covered by Medicare part D, you will be able to get the shingles vaccine and the Tdap vaccine for little to no cost.

The cost of vaccines for adults who are covered by Medicaid varies significantly by state. If you are covered by Medicaid, you will likely access a flu shot for little to no cost. If you are not covered by insurance, the out-of-pocket cost of vaccines varies depending on the vaccine type and where you are vaccinated.

Below we outlined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and private sector costs for some adult vaccines. Note that the prices may be highest due to additional fees at your testing location.

    Flu Shot Price Notes:

Australian researchers help target single flu shot for life
    • The standard quadrivalent flu shot is designed to protect against four different flu strain viruses two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses and is now the standard offered everywhere.
    • The trivalent flu shot option is not being carried yet by any retailer this year.
    • The FLUAD quadrivalent flu shot is recommended for those age 65 and over, as it includes an adjuvant designed to strengthen, broaden, and lengthen the duration of the flu vaccine response.
    • Even though I have listed the 65+ FLUAD quadrivalent prices here, everyone in this age group is eligible for free flu shots if they are enrolled in Medicare, Part B.
    • In prior years, the CDC found that the FluMist quadrivalent nasal mist spray option was not as effective compared to the flu shot and it was pulled from the market. However, it is being offered at a few retailers and public health departments, with the disclaimer that certain populations should not use it.

If none of these retailers have locations by you, check out the CDCâs vaccines.gov flu shot vaccine locator website, which will provide a map of providers near you that offer flu shots.

    Free Prescription Drug Card

Even with insurance my prescriptions can cost a bundle. Ive noticed that many supermarket pharmacies have started prescription drug card programs to help ease the financial burden of prescription drugs.

One company offers a no-strings-attached free prescription drug card, which can help you get cheap flu shots. Called BuzzRX the company provides access to affordable prescription drug coverage through their free prescription drug card. They say prices can be up to 75% lower than regular pharmacy prices.

Can You Get A Costco Flu Shot Without Membership

Here are two things you may not know about the Coscto pharmacy. One, anyone can get a prescription filled at Costco. And two, anyone can get a flu shot at Costco. You can just walk in for these services.

So, you do not need to be a Costco member to take advantage of the companys pharmacy services. However, now is a great time to sign up for a Coscto membership. Why? Because the member pricing for a flu shot is just $19.99.

    Preservative Free Flu Shots

I know that youve likely come to this article to find out where you can go to get a free or cheap flu shot. But maybe you want information about preservative free flu shots.

Back when I used to wear contact lenses, I could use only solution without thimerosal. Some people may want themierosal-free flu shots as well.

Heres what you need to know about that: any flu shot that comes as a pre-filled syringe does not have any preservatives in it. Youll only find preservatives in a vial that is designed to be used for multiple shots. Pre-filled syringes are for one use only. Many COVID shots are single-use shots.

So if youre concerned about finding a preservative free flu shot, ask your pharmacist if they use a prefilled syringe. If so, then you should be good to go.

For example, Costco lists its flu shots as Suspension Prefilled Syringe. Therefore, I feel confident in saying these are thimerasol, preservative-free flu vaccines.

    Egg free flu vaccine

A friend of mine is allergic to eggs. That meant that for many years, she could not get a flu shot. Why? Because companies grow flu vaccines in an egg-based solution.

Or at least they used to do this.

According to the CDC, starting last year, there were two egg-free flu vaccines. They are:

    • Flublok Quadrivalent
    • Flucelvax Quadrivalent

Can You Get The Flu Shot At The Same Time As A Covid

Although data on receiving the COVID vaccine at the same time as the influenza vaccine is limited, the CDC advises that its safe to do so. Research is ongoing, but one study among healthcare workers found that the flu shot offered some protection against severe forms of COVID-19. But because they are two different viruses, you should be vaccinated against each one to be fully protected. Getting the flu shot will not interfere with the effects of the COVID-19 vaccine, and you dont have to disclose whether youve been vaccinated for COVID-19 if you dont want to.

In the instance that youre experiencing flu symptoms or youve tested positive for COVID-19, you should wait until recovering and completing your isolation period before getting a flu or COVID-19 shot. For mild symptoms and a negative COVID-19 test, its okay to go ahead and get vaccinated for the flu or COVID-19.

    Considerations For Getting A Covid

Its safe for your health care provider to administer a COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as other vaccines. If youre 12 years of age or older, you may get the flu shot at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine. You may also get it any time before or after you receive the flu shot.

For children aged 5 to 11, the National Advisory Council on Immunization recommends a 14-day interval between a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines. This is to help better monitor for possible side effects from COVID-19 vaccines. Provinces and territories will decide on an interval for this age group as part of their vaccination programs.

Talk to a health care provider or consult your provincial or territorial public health authority for the latest guidance.
