Preservative Free Flu Shots

Free and low-cost flu shot options in Florida

I know that youve likely come to this article to find out where you can go to get a free or cheap flu shot. But maybe you want information about preservative free flu shots.

Back when I used to wear contact lenses, I could use only solution without thimerosal. Some people may want themierosal-free flu shots as well.

Heres what you need to know about that: any flu shot that comes as a pre-filled syringe does not have any preservatives in it. Youll only find preservatives in a vial that is designed to be used for multiple shots. Pre-filled syringes are for one use only. Many COVID shots are single-use shots.

So if youre concerned about finding a preservative free flu shot, ask your pharmacist if they use a prefilled syringe. If so, then you should be good to go.

For example, Costco lists its flu shots as Suspension Prefilled Syringe. Therefore, I feel confident in saying these are thimerasol, preservative-free flu vaccines.

Egg free flu vaccine

A friend of mine is allergic to eggs. That meant that for many years, she could not get a flu shot. Why? Because companies grow flu vaccines in an egg-based solution.

Or at least they used to do this.

According to the CDC, starting last year, there were two egg-free flu vaccines. They are:

  • Flublok Quadrivalent
  • Flucelvax Quadrivalent

What Are The Different Types Of Flu Shots

The CDC recommends any licensed, age-appropriate flu vaccine without preference for one over the otherincluding injectable vaccines and nasal spray vaccines. However, the CDC recommends that adults 65 years and older get an injectable vaccine, and high-dose formulations are available for this age group.

Its important to note that there are two types of flu vaccinations: trivalent and quadrivalent. Trivalent vaccines protect against 2 strains of influenza A and 1 strain of influenza B, whereas quadrivalent vaccines protect against 2 strains of influenza A and 2 strains of influenza B. All of the flu vaccines in the 2021-2022 season are of the quadrivalent variety, and are safe for individuals over 6 months of age with a few exceptions.

Can You Get The Covid & Flu Vaccine At The Same Time

Yes, there is no conflict between the COVID-19 and flu vaccines. You can get both within the same season, and even at the same time. However, it is recommended that if you get both the flu and COVID vaccinations at the same time, you get them in separate arms as the same arm can result in double the soreness. There has even been discussion about combining the two vaccines together at some point.

And, yes, you can get infected with the flu and COVID-19 at the same time too. All the more reason to get both vaccines.

Will I Be Safe From Covid

All CVS Pharmacy locations, including those at Target stores, are following CDC Covid-19 prevention guidelines. You will complete a Covid-19 questionnaire via text, all staff and customers must wear masks, and all immunization areas are sanitized between patients. Someone will take your temperature when you first arrive.

If there is no Target store near you, flu shots are available at Costco, Walgreens, and Walmart, too.

Saving On Pharmacy Vaccinations

Just like at your doctors office, pharmacies that offer vaccinations will file with your insurance.

Many vaccinations wont cost you anything if you have a private insurance plan through your employer or that you purchased on a state marketplace. Under the Affordable Care Act, private plans are required to fully cover the cost of recommended vaccinations for adults and children as preventive medical care.

Unfortunately, Medicare doesnt do as good of a job of covering recommended immunizations. Only flu, pneumonia, and hepatitis B vaccines are fully covered under Medicare Part B. Other vaccinations are treated like prescription drugs and are covered under Medicare Part D or Advantage plans. That means youll be responsible for paying any co-pays and deductibles required by your prescription drug plan.

If youre paying out of pocket, shop around to find the lowest price. When we checked, we found the lowest prices without insurance at Costco. For example, Pneumovax pneumonia vaccine cost $110 at CVS and Target, but just $97 at Costco pharmacies. And the dual Hepatitis A and B vaccine costs $145 at CVS, $150 at Walgreens , and $93 at Costco.

Another option if you are uninsured or paying out of pocket is to check with statewide free health clinics and community health centers, which offer free or low-cost preventive care and low-cost vaccinations. Find a clinic near you.

Although data on receiving the COVID vaccine at the same time as the influenza vaccine is limited, the CDC advises that its safe to do so. Research is ongoing, but one study among healthcare workers found that the flu shot offered some protection against severe forms of COVID-19. But because they are two different viruses, you should be vaccinated against each one to be fully protected.
