Target Offers $5 Coupon In Push To Ease Incentivize Covid
May 5, 2021 / 11:33 AM / CBS Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES COVID-19 vaccinations are slowing down, so more sites and retailers are trying to make it easier to get the vaccine by allowing walk-ins and giving incentives.
Retail giant Target has a new incentive starting this week for people who are vaccine hesitant get a $5 coupon for getting a vaccination at a CVS pharmacy inside a Target store. Target says it’s making the offer to the general public, and employees as their way of supporting vaccination efforts.
Target’s not alone in offering incentives to get people vaccinated, an idea that has even been endorsed by President Joe Biden. New Jersey state officials are offering a “shot and a beer” for residents who get their first dose in May, while an experiment run by UCLA researchers found a cash payment could help convince people to get the shot a move that the state of Maryland is making for its hesitant state employees.
In California, 41.5% of the population is fully vaccinated, and 18.9% of the state is partially vaccinated. And while hesitancy seems to be less of a problem in the Golden State, Californians can still score a free doughnut from Krispy Kreme by showing their vaccination card.
People who are looking for vaccination convenience, rather than an incentive, can walk in without an appointment at any of the 308 Walmart or Sam’s Club pharmacies in California for their shot.

CVS pushing flu vaccinations in August

Neither federal nor state health officials recommend flu vaccinations in August. The Rhode Island Department of Healths annual campaign to promote flu vaccination historically begins in October. One top public health expert charges the CVS strategy is picking profits over public health.
Best time for a flu vaccination is October say experts

The winter of 2017-18 was the hardest hitting flu year in recent years with 1,390 hospitalizations and 60 deaths, according to data provided by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The Rhode Island Department of Health tells GoLocal that the flu hits Rhode Island later than CVS is promotion. Seasons go from the first week of October to the third week of May, with individual dates varying by season,” said RIDOH.

For that reason, it is recommended to get both the COVID-19 booster and the flu shot this year. You can even get both at the same time, with no adverse effects being reported. Target Offers $5 Coupons To Those Who Get Vaccinated In Its Stores
Adults who get vaccinated against COVID-19 at CVS pharmacies inside Target stores nationwide will also get a $5 coupon, starting this week, the discount retailer announced on Tuesday.
Target offers immunization shots at nearly all the more than 1,700 CVS pharmacies inside its stores. The extra incentive for the general public and its employees comes as part of its support of public vaccination efforts, the company stated.
The Minneapolis-based retailer in March said it was partnering with CVS Pharmacy to help vaccinate Americans during a pandemic that has claimed more than 578,000 U.S. lives.
Convincing hesitant Americans to get vaccinated against the coronavirus had the governor of West Virginia last week taking the atypical step of offering $100 savings bonds to residents 35 and younger to roll up their sleeves.
In recent weeks and months, Americans have been offered an array of incentives to get vaccinated against COVID-19, with donuts and weed among the freebies retailers big and small have been dangling to consumers.
President Biden this week set a new goal of having 160 million U.S. adults fully vaccinated and 70% of adults at least partially vaccinated by July 4, ramping up efforts to reach rural areas and communities where the rate of immunizations has lagged.
Getting skeptical Americans to get inoculated is challenging, Mr. Biden acknowledged.

People who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 are also urged to get the flu shot. In Sacramento County, public health officials are offering dual clinics where people can get both the COVID-19 and flu shots together.
“Co-administration of COVID and flu vaccines is safe,” said Sacramento County immunization program manager Rachel Allen. “The CDC made that announcement earlier this year. We do encourage people to be vaccinated against both illnesses, and both of those are illnesses that often surge during winter months.”

Can I Still Get The Flu If I’ve Been Vaccinated

Yes. Those who have been vaccinated may still get the flu.
This can be caused by one or more of the following:
- Exposure to the virus before vaccination
- Exposure to the virus during the two-week period after receiving vaccination, or before immunity develops.
- Exposure to flu strains that may be circulating and are not included in the flu vaccine.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration reviews the flu data and determines the combination of viruses most likely to prevent the flu each year. Despite the amount of research that goes into the flu vaccine composition, the virus is constantly changing. Therefore, the vaccine may not be a perfect match to the current circulating virus. The good news is, those who have been vaccinated generally have a milder case of flu than those who are unvaccinated.
