Free Flu Jabs For Millions Scrapped Amid Fears Brits Face Rising Cases
- 10:26, 4 Mar 2022
FREE flu jabs for millions of Brits have been scrapped as the country faces a rise in cases.
People over the age of 50 and school kids aged 11-15 had previously been offered the shot for free – but this has now been revoked.
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Brits were urged to come forward for their flu vaccinations in order to help ease pressure on the NHS.
In , more than 35 million Brits were told they would be eligible for the jab in order to tackle a possible wave of infections.
Seasonal flu usually kills around 7,000 people a year – but the NHS had been reacting to a report that claimed there could be up to 60,000 flu deaths.
A letter published on the NHS website has now revealed that it will go back to ‘pre-pandemic recommendations’ when it comes to who it dishes the flu jab out to.
It stated: “Seasonal flu vaccination remains an important public health intervention and a key priority for 2022/23 to reduce morbidity, mortality and hospitalisation associated with flu at a time when the NHS and social care will be managing winter pressures, potentially including further outbreaks of Covid-19.’
The change in rules comes as the UK Health Security Agency has warned that there could be an uptick in flu cases this year.
When Is A Z
Spoiler alert: its not! Because its so easy to use, the Z-Pak used to be a go-to prescription for sinus infections. But it turns out that only a minority of these prescriptions are appropriate because the majority of sinus infections are viral and not bacterial. In fact, studies have found that about a third of antibiotic prescriptions for sinus infections, sore throats, and ear infections arent even necessary. Overprescribing antibiotics increases the chance that bacteria will become resistant to them and disrupt the gut bacterial flora for months. Indeed, azithromycin is no longer recommended for bacterial sinus infections due to the risk of resistance.
If you have a sinus infection, expect to feel lousy for several days. After all, your body is waging war against an infection. You might experience:
-
A runny nose
-
A sore throat
-
A cough
Youre also likely to feel more tired and achy and maybe even experience a low-grade fever. Most people improve within a week, but symptoms can last up to 2 weeks. Coughs can linger for a week after that.
Treating a sinus infection boils down to whether its viral or bacterial. Colds, for example, are viral. And antibiotics like the Z-Pak are not effective against viral infections. In fact, viral sinus infections have no cure. Treatment is aimed at managing symptoms and includes:
If you still dont feel better, your healthcare provider may suggest nasal or lung inhalers for other symptoms.
-
Diarrhea

Inhibitory Assay To Determine The Effect Of Azm On Virus Attachment Or Internalization During Infection

Attachment stage assay: A549 cells were incubated with a mixture of 200µM AZM and viruses at 4°C for 1h. After removal of the mixture, the host cells were washed with cold PBS, and total RNA was extracted. Internalization stage assay: A549 cells were incubated with viruses at 4°C for 1h. The cells were washed with warm PBS and cultured with medium containing 200µM AZM at 37°C for 1h. After incubation, the cells were washed with PBS and treated with proteinase K in PBS at a final concentration of 100µgml1 at 37°C for 5min to remove viruses remaining at the cell surface. The extracted total RNA was synthesized into cDNA, and the expression levels of virus M1 and nucleoprotein were analyzed by qPCR.

So What Happened To Z
To be clear, nothing really happened to Z-Packs specifically, Dr. Vyas says. Theyre still around and still frequently prescribed to treat a few specific conditions. But lots of things happened around Z-Packs over the last several years that made doctors realize that their prescribing practices werent quite right.
In fact, in many ways, the rise and fall of the Z-Pack is simply a reflection of the way our understanding of antibiotics as a whole has developed in the past decade. We now know so much more about which antibiotics are best used for which illnesses, how the overuse of antibiotics contributes to antibiotic resistance, and the what the optimal time course is for various antibiotics. All of this resulted in Z-Packs becoming a bit less unique and less suited for some common illnesses.
The first big factor in the waning of Z-Pack popularity was that our developing understanding of antibiotic resistance made doctors wary about handing out Z-Packs so frequently for seemingly every minor health issue that might have a bacterial cause. They were being given out like candy, Dr. Vyas says.
When bacteria are resistant to a medication, doctors need to use a different antibiotic to treat the infection. Thats concerning because we have a limited number of antibiotic options available. And the ones we can use against antibiotic-resistant strains can cause serious side effects or arent necessarily the best options to use .

Wait Remind Me What Z
A Z-Pack is literally just azithromycin, a standard antibiotic introduced in 1992, formulated in a package of six pills, which are taken over five days.
That short time commitment was a huge part of their appeal. Other antibiotics may require multiple doses a day for 10 or 14 days at a time, Tara Vijayan, M.D., assistant clinical professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, tells SELF. The Z-Pack was a nice defined course and relatively short, she says. It made people feel like they can do this they can complete their course and theyll be done with it.
Plus, the ones I took were usually hot pink and came in a blister pack rather than a bottlefactors that mattered a lot to a sick and miserable 8-year-old me. They were cheap, easy, cute, and they had a little marketing zing, Neha Vyas, M.D., a family medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic, tells SELF.
And, Dr. Vyas says, theyre indicated for a bunch of different health issues , which made them an appealing option when the first-line treatments werent available. For instance, before azithromycin, if you had a penicillin allergy and needed an antibiotic for a case of strep throat, your only option was likely a cephalosporin antibiotic, which still has some cross-reactivity with penicillin allergies, Dr. Vyas explains. So, if there were any worries about allergies, a Z-Pack was an obvious, nearly all-purpose choice.
How To Take And Store
With the exception of Zmax, which is best taken on an empty stomach , azithromycin can be taken with or without food. Follow your doctor’s instructions as well as those on the label. Do not take more or less than what has been prescribed.
Take azithromycin until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better. If you stop taking azithromycin too soon or skip doses, your infection may return, allowing the bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics.
As with all medications, store in a cool, dry place, out of sight and out of reach of children.

What Should I Avoid While Taking Azithromycin 3 Day Dose Pack
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor before using anti-diarrhea medicine.
Azithromycin 3 Day Dose Pack could make you sunburn more easily. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when you are outdoors.
What Does Antibiotic Resistance Mean
According to the CDC, antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria changes in some way to reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
When bacteria are exposed to antibiotics repeatedly, such as when you take the medication needlessly or too frequently, the germs in your body start to evolve. These changes can make the germs stronger than before so they completely resist the antibiotic. Your illness may linger with no signs of improvement. Or your illness may suddenly take a turn for the worse, requiring you to seek emergency medical care. You may have to be admitted to the hospital and get several different antibiotics intravenously. Sadly, those around you may get the resistant bacteria and come down with a similar illness that is very difficult to treat.

What Is The Typical Z
Z-Packs are available as a package containing 6 tablets, 250 mg each. Youll start by taking 2 tablets on the first day as a single dose, followed by 1 tablet on days 2 through 5. For children, the dosing is typically based on their weight and what condition is being treated. Theres a similar product called the Tri-Pak that comes with 3 tablets of azithromycin, each containing 500 mg. With this product, you typically take one tablet daily for 3 days.
Its important to take your Z-pack as prescribed. Try to take it at the same time every day youre supposed to take it until you finish the entire prescription regimen. Not completing your treatment can increase the risk that your infection returns and that the bacteria start becoming insensitive to azithromycin, known as antibiotic resistance. This makes the bacteria more difficult to treat.
Examination Of Inhibitory Effects Of Azm On Budded Progeny Viruses

A549 cells were first infected with Apdm09 virus at 35°C for 1h and cultured with or without AZM . After 10h of culturing, virus gene expression in the cells and titers of budded progeny viruses in the medium were measured by qPCR and plaque assays, respectively. The newly prepared A549 cells were infected with the collected culture medium containing progeny viruses with or without AZM at 35°C for 1h. After infection, the cells were cultured in AZM-free supplemented medium at 37°C for 7h and were subjected to M1 expression analysis.

Beauty: With Tara Ledden
BUDGET: Boots Ingredients exfoliating scalp serum with salicylic acid, £4.50 for 50ml, boots.com.
While I dont suffer with dandruff, my roots get greasy quickly, so I was hoping the exfoliating salicylic acid would have the same clarifying effect on my scalp as my go-to SA face serum does on my skin.
And it does, breaking down excess oil and leaving my hair super-clean and volumised.
The instructions say use it twice a week but I found it too drying so I use it once a fortnight for a deep-clean feeling.
MID: Pacifica Scalp Love rosemary mint serum, £14 for 58ml, cultbeauty.co.uk.
I love the pipette dispenser, which makes it easier to disperse the product around your scalp without drenching your hair.
It also means you can apply it just to itchy areas rather than the whole scalp if you want to make the product last longer.
The formula is gentle enough to leave on overnight, thanks to the soothing aloe vera, so you dont need to devote an extra ten minutes to your wash routine. Despite the oil texture, it washes out with no residue, leaving a soft, healthy scalp.
LUXURY: Fable & Mane Sahascalp Amla soothing serum, £29 for 55ml, cultbeauty.co.uk.
As well as excess oil, the product build-up on my scalp can sometimes make it feel itchy, especially in warm weather or, when I wear a hat and scarf, but this soothed the itch from first use.
It smells great and sinks in quickly, so it doesnt leave any residue on my pillow or make my roots look oily.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed
Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as bronchitis pneumonia sexually transmitted diseases and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. Azithromycin also is used to treat or prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection . Azithromycin is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Antibiotics such as azithromycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Should I Take A Z Pack For A Cold
There is no reason to take a Z pack to treat a cold. The common cold is a viral infection, most often a rhinovirus. Viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics such as the Z pack.
Specific antivirals may target and kill viruses, but the Z pack is not one of them. Taking the Z pack will not help with a cold in any way.
The common cold usually lasts a few days, and the body can deal with it without outside help.
So, in general, there is not much that a person needs to do when fighting a cold, as the body will do the most work.
However, there are some things a person can do to help support the body, including:
- drinking extra water
- getting plenty of rest
- avoiding too much activity
If symptoms become uncomfortable or interfere with daily life, over-the-counter drugs may help treat symptoms until the body can get rid itself of the underlying infection.
Some drugs, such as acetaminophen , target symptoms individually, which helps reduce fever and pain. Other drugs, such as cough syrups, may contain different medicines to treat many symptoms at once.
Always follow the instructions on the label and avoid using these drugs in children. Some drugs have childrens versions available, and anyone who is uncertain should talk to their pediatrician before dosing their child.
The common cold tends to go away on its own, as the body deals with the underlying viral infection. There are still steps a person can take to help prevent the cold or prevent the spread of the cold.
These include:
